A simple way to do this, the Western Pine Association suggests, is to apply a couple of coats of either spar varnish or lacquer over the stain after It has dried. Buff the last coat with 3-0 steel woo and then apply and polish with sev- eral coats of paste wax. Maintenance thereafter is easy just regular dusting from top to bottom with a soft cloth. Don't use oily cloths, for they make a thick paste of the dirt. The world's largest log cabin, built In Portland. AN ALL-YEAR SWIMMING POOL can be built by careful planning within the erately-priced homeowners. Light-weight, trust type rafters of Douglas fir support reach of mod- the roof over the pool. Fir or Western red cedar board-and-batten siding givos a rustic touch. Glassed wall sections permit a view of the pool from bedroom, dining or kitchen wing of the home. Economical New Swimming Pool For Use All Of Year Most of the 165 million Ameri cans must settle for just a few jihert months of summer wealh er. Hie time is all too brief each year for them to enjoy outdoor .swimming and other advantages usually associated with more trop ical climates. A number of ingenious U.S. arch itects may hu?e found a way for many thousands more northern people to share the year-round pleasures enjoyed by residents of the southland. These clever designers have come up with several plans for enclosing a Jo-cost but adequate ; .swimming pool within a moderate-1 ly priced contemporary home. The I secret is in the design and in the floor plan. An inexpensive home can be built so Umt it completely sur rounds a swimming pool without Jntericring in any way with the usual functions of the home. Most popular of the pool-within-n-home designs is the "U'-shapcd floor plan. Three enclosing walls of the swimming pool are created automatically by Uie three walls of the "U'-shaped home facing the inner court. The fourth wall of the pool is generally a simple stud ded wall joining the two ends of the "U.' It Is comparatively easy to de Sinn a lightweight, truss-type roof of Douglas fir dimension and small timbers to cover both the house and Uie pool. Excavating for the pool should be done when- Uie home is beim; built and need eost no more than dirt removal for an ordinary base ment. It is best to have concrete or fir-decked runways or lounging areas completely around Uie poo! and joining with the walls of the home. What would normally be the exterior walls of the home become the enclosing walls for the swim ming pool. The pool is given a rustic and outdoor flavor if Uie walls around it are of western red cedar or Douglas fir and a boards-and-bat-ten siding pattern helps develop this theme. The truss-type rafters can be left exposed above the pool. Siding and rafters can be covered with heavy varnish or .ou ter's oil to prevent moisture ab sorption. In planning such a home, it has been found convenient to place the kitchen and dining facilities in the base of Uie "U," with one wing containing the bedrooms and the facing wing the utilities, play rooms, garage and warerooms. In most cases where swimming pools have been built, Uie families de cided against basements, but found enough room on Uie main floor in the extended wings of Uie ' U " design. Some of Uiese homes have been designed with a hallway along all three wings of the home, with plen ty of glass wall space so that a view of Uie pool can be had from any part of the home. To give extra light to the pool, entire sec tions of the roof have been con structed of lucite material. The tremendous flexibility of wood in modern design opens up all sort, of opportunities for plan ning a home like this. Douglas fir dimension lumber can be en gineered in strong, long and light weight trusses tc carry any de sirable span load, such as across the width of the pool, but without running the cost up to any de gree. Several popular softwoods, so widely used in homes like this, add a distinctive outdoor theme which fits with the idea of an en closed swimming pool. The real value of using Douglas fir, west- i em red cedar or west coast hem lock for exterior finishing and sid ing is in Uie durability and long I lite of Uiese woods. If the pool water is kept heat-! ed, which is advisable during Uie winter months, then Uie enclosed pool area can become a wonder ful growing area for all sorts of tropical plants and trees. They can be potted and arranged to simulate a tropical paradise. Theresa Need I ill fomiliei Li,.l 1 zr.
