V m.. 2TTT i f XEJ . j- LI - ' YOUNG RUSSEL DONDSON plays in a corner of hit parents home at 4652 Cannon Drive. His father, E. H. Dondion, has done considerable work on the interior of the home, a remodeled former garage, and plans an addition on the outside of the home this spring. Home Plans Of All Types Jam U.S. Drawing Boards A good year In home building lias 'just been completed And an ether good year looms ahead. In .spite of all the fuss and feathers over credit restrictions, more than n million new homes were built in 1955 and more than a million teem certain to be built in 1956. Building plans of all kinds now on the drawing boards and con tracts already awarded have prompted the Departments of Commerce and Labor to estimate that 1966 construction expenditures will set a new all-lime high, per haps 44 billion dollars a Jump of 4 billion or so. Your house and my house will bolster that big outlay, aside from the Joneses' new house, because of the repairs and changes we will J make. The new year has been ear marked as home modernization year and that Is more than Just p. slogan. Manufacturers and processors of building materials and equipment have organized to make concerted drives "to restore obsolescent homes and bring other aged homes up to modern standards . . . and prevent the birth of new slums." Such Is their stated aim. Con sidering the power of attractive advertising, we'll all undoubtedly Jail into line. Meanwhile, definite new trends In houses have taken shape during- 1955. So this is one occasion when looking backward and for ward at the same time can be more profitable (or homeowners and prospective homeowners, than just rubber-necking. The most apparent trend of 1955 out- be was toward informality' and door livine. The family room came one of the biggest features in most new designs. The formal liv ing room was pushed farther in the direction of the extinct parlor. It seems that people began to realize they are building houses for their families to live in not primarily for entertaining com pany. Bigger homesltes became the rule. ' Not because of an ascend ancy of the ranch house (split levels made a big showing) but because of the demand for elbow room. -Nearby land became prohib itive and often unattractive. Good roads and better cars opened new vistas. While garden columns and gar den advertising expanded, more glass was used In nouses win dow walls, sliding glass doors, glass jalousies. Glass became scarce and we'll see an even great er demand for it in 1956. Now the building industry rea lizes that everybody can't have a new house every year and that the upkeep of some 45 million older houses Involves about as much as the construction of one million new houses. So powerful organizations have been formed to encourage us to lix up our houses in 1956. 1 The Chamber of Commerce of the United States has sponsored Operation House . Improvement. The National Assn. of Plumbing Contractors is promoting package remodeling, wrapping up the serv ices of carpenters, electricians, plasterers and painters along witli those of the plumbers. Sometimes this is difficult without damaging the .wood surf ace. One way to do it la to heat the old putty to soften it. New tank type propane blow torches, throw ing a fine pencil flame, are handy for this job. Gently heat the putty until it is pliable. Move the flame slowly and steadily. Do not hold it too long in one spot. Use a putty knife or scraper to remove the heated putty as you progress with the flame. Then ap ply a heavy coat of Unseed oil to the bare wood to keep it from soaking oil out of the new putty, PLUMBING Residential . It's not that we've stopped eat ing in the dining room. We found that the dining room was "on dis play" more than It was actually in use, so we've begun to make more efficient use of it. In nresent-dav architecture the dining room has emerged into a multi-purpose lamny room, oome Mmes it's an "L" shaped room combining the kitchen and dining room. In other cases it is now au extentlon of the living room, add ing an extra spaciousness to it. In any case, it's a room that is now being used Instead of simply admired. Even if the architecture of your home does not lend Itself to en larging the dining room or com bining it with another room, there is a simple and practical way in which you can make more use of It. You can do what many people are doing and turn the room into a den-dinlng room combination. And It doesn't involve discarding your dining-room table. Move that table away from the center of the room against a side wall and group the chairs around three sides of it. Place an easy chair in one corner, a studio couch on one wall, and the television set on an opposite wall. Then Intro, duce the warmth of western pmo paneling on one wall, all four walls or as a wainscoting around the room. Contrary to many so-called "do. it-yourself" projects, this is one that the average homeowner can accomplish with average ability and simple hand tools. The seleo. tion of the variety of paneling de pends on the desired effect, but among the ten woods from the western pine region there is an almost limitless selection of color grain, and texture. These woods are available in knotty or clear grades, are suitable for natural, stained, or painted finishes, and can be installed vertically or hori zontally to suit your taste. After completing this transforma tion, you will feel as if you have added a complete new room to your home because of the added utility you have created. Getting the tele vision set out of the living room seems almost reason enough for this project, but the added warmth, beauty, and livability of your pine paneled den-dinlng room eonibina tion will provide many more bonuses. The average household should be equipped with six to eight sheets per bed. r-7 X to plan and design a now homo for you, Just drop In . . . let our Financing Expert! show you how easily new home cm be included in your budget!
