Fort Rock Plans Seeding TORT ROCK Plans are being laid for reseeding the 2.000-acre area burned over in the Labor Day range (ire here. The fire was on federal land administered by the Bureau of Land Management and used by C. B. Webster. The area is eight miles northeast of Fort Rock. The reseeding Is attracting at tention because It is the first in Oregon to use rye on public land to establish ground cover. Crested wheatgrass will be sown on this site a year or so later. The prac tice of sowing a grain crop as a protection against wind erosion In advance of grass seeding has long been recommended by E. R. Jack man, range crops specialist of Ore gon 8tate College. It is the meth od generally employed on private land but has hitherto been avoided on publie land because of the risk that raising a cereal grain might ' change the classification of the land. Seed rye, tractors and imple ments for planting will be furn ished by the BLM who will also lurnish the equipment and seed for the later seeding of crested wheatgrass. , Japanese Yuletide Stripped Of Most Religious Aspects TOKYO Lfl A frosty night, a jolly little man and a sleigh flash ing across the moon going east it's Santa Claus Ban headed for the land of the sun goddess. And with him will come Japan's unique and joyous celebration of the Yuletide borrowed from the Western world and stripped in most cases of its religious signifi cance. This year the old. old fairy tale of Christmas will live in probably more homes of this predominantly Buddhist and Shinto nation than ever before, although tailored care fully to limited resources. . For days children have been prattling about Santa San. singing "Jingle Bells' and "Silent Night" and taking goggle-eyed walks with their parents into the lavish Christ mas wonderlands of Tokyo's de partment stores. There curvaceous girl Santa Clauses direct crowds into eleva tors, giant spangled Christmas trees rear two and three stories high and gifts of pearls, silks and artwork are amazingly cheap by Western standards. The decorations do not carry over into the average home. Only the rivh can afford a tree, largely because of the approachmg. more traditional New Year's holiday r.'hich requires special ornamenta tion of its own. Christmas morning children will pop out of bed to find a present or two waiting for them. Later in the day the family may dine out, perhaps on chicken. For the chil dren there will be Ice cream and cakes.
