Eden Reshuffles Cabinet; Air Power Gets Major Boost
LONDON (UPi-Prlme Minister
Anthony Eden reorganized his cab
inet from top to bottom today to
meet the threats of Inflation at
home and new Soviet provacaticms
abroad.
A key feature of the reshuffle
was a decision to stress air power
in Britain's armed forces at the
expenses, of the Army, whose au
thorized first-line reserve strength
was slashed Tuesday from 12 to
two divisions.
Four major posts and many
minor, ones were involved In the
reorganization, in which Eden re
o'aced ministers inherited from
Winston Churchill with younger
men of his own choice. The aver
age age of the cabinet was re
duced from 58 to 55 years by the
changes.
The major replacements were retary to lead the diplomatic fight
affected by transfers within the
existing cabinet, but seven minor
ministers were dropped. Six of
them were either elevated to the
peerage or promoted within its
ranks. '
Chancellor of the Exchequer R.
A. Butler was promoted to lord
privy seal and majority leader in
the House of Commons, making
him In effect deputy prime minis'
tr.
Harold Macmlllan. whose poli
cies as foreign secretary have been
under opposition fire for some
time, was shifted to the exchequer
post to replace Butler as head of
the fight against Britain s ominous
inflation.
Defense Secretary Selwyn Lloyd
replaced Macmlllan as foreign scc-
agalnst Russia, and Labor Minis
ter Sir Walter Monckton moved up
to the defense post to protect Bri
tain if diplomacy falls.
Health Minister Iain MacLeod
replaced Monckton as labor min
ister, and was replaced in his turn
by R. H. Turton, who is new to
the cabinet.

HOLLYWOOD (UP) Fess Par-
ker has turned in bis coonskin cap.
officially burled hfs Davy Crockett
character and admitted that the
nationwide storm he caused la
down to a drizzle.
A year ago Parker's furry 'top
and shootin" iron launched the
country's sub-sub-deb set on the
biggest hero worehip craze since
Hopalong Cassldy. But Parker con
fesses that the kids have left their
coonskin caps lo the moths.
"Too much heat in too short a
time," drawled the lanky actor as
he sat in his modern hillside home.
"But I'm grateful to old Davy. I
only feel we should let him rest in
peace and give him back his
cap."
The second of this year's two
part Crockett television series was
aired on "Disneyland" last week.
Unless Olsney runs them again In
the spring, that's the last of Davy.
Parker meantime has starred in
a Disney color feature, "The Great
Locomotive Chase," a Civil War
story. He was promoted to a fancy
frock coat with black velvet piping
and a wide-brimmed gray hat.
"My wardrobe will knock you
out," grinned the slow-lalking ac
tor. "Bclme I had a full beard.
but now I'm clean-shaven. I still
net killed in this movie, though.
But In my next Disney picture,
'Westward Ho. the Wagons', I live.
And I even get the woman."
Although Parker's role in Dis
ney's TV scries Is over, "The
Great Locomotive Chase" was
filmed for home screens al.so. The
program, "A True Life Adventure
With Fess Parker," will be tele
vised next spring and "that will
help me make the transition.
"Actually. I've switched from
Davy more successfully than 1
Imagined," said Parker. "When we
were on' location In Georgia the
kids would come up and say, 'Mr.
Parker, can we have your auto
graph?' They didn't call me Davy.
Most of my fan mail Is addressed
lo Fess Parker.
"I'm grateful to Mr. Disney for
this opportunity to do other pic
tures. Otherwise, my career would
have ended right where it be
gan."
