Page, 83, who came with her fam
ily to the Wood Rfvcr Valley In
1908, died this morning at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Edna Page
Orth at Port Klamath.
Mrs. Page had returned from
Klamath Valley Hospital about to
weeks ago after receiving treat
ment for a broken hip and bron
chial pneumonia.
She was an honorary member of
me rort Klamath Civic Improve
ment Club and the Wood River
Pioneers and Oldtlmers.
In addition to her daughter, sur
vivors Include two sons, Ouss A.
Page and William A. Page, both
ol Port Klamath; a granddaugh
ter, Mrs. John Palmer of Klamath

Dulles Tells Intention

Of Stepping -Up Spending
WASHINGTON Wl Secretary of
State Dulles announced Tuesday
the administration wants to step
up Its foreign aid spending by 200
million dollars next year, and will
ask Congress for a $4,900,000,000
appropriation.
All of the contemplated increase
in spending would be for economic
help a field In which Russia has
recently shown great activity.
Alluding to this, Dulles said the
United Stales "seeks no monopoly
In rendering economic assistance,"
but declared "It would seem unnat
ural for the Soviet rulers to pro
vide economic aid to other peoples
than the peoples they already rule
are themselves In dire need."
He added:
"We hope that Soviet economic
aid is not offered as a Trojan
horse to penetrate, and then take
over, independent countries."
Dulles told a news conference
he regretted very much a misun
derstanding which he said had
given congressional leaders the
impression the program to be sub
mitted In January would be about
the snme as that voted this year.
Dulles said the new money re
quest to be laid before Congress
will cover both military and eco
nomic and that the jump of about
42.200,000,000 over this year's pro
gram is to be explained In large
part by a need to keep the pipe
line of military supplies full.
He drew a distinction between
appropriations and prosDective ex
penditures, explaining that actual
spending on foreign aid will be
only 200 million dollars more than
the present fiscal year, ending
next June 30.
The money appropriated, but not
to be spent in the new fiscal year,
would odd to the reserve of for
elgn aid spending authority for
use In future years. It would raise
this to about seven billion dollars.
Dulles said the requested new
appropriations will be about $1,900.

billion dollars in new money and
spending authority. Potter is a
member of the Senate Appropria
tions Committee, which would have
to pass on foreign aid proposals.
Sen. Mansfield (D-Mont), a mem
ber of the Senate Foreign Rela
tions Committee, said the proposed
five 'billion dollar appropriation
"seems too big to me."
Yesterday Mansfield said that if
the administration Is getting ready
to ask tor that much, it has
"broken faith with the Democratic
and Republican leaders of Con
gress." "They are asking twice as much
as they asked for this year after
promising congressional leaders
less than a week ago their requests
will be similar to this year's," he
said in a followup interview today.
After a White House briefing last
week several congressional leaders
of both parties said they were told
the foreign aid appropriations re
quest for the 1957 fiscal year would
be only sngntiy more man me

approved for the current year.
Actual expenditures have been
running higher than the amount of
new funds provided yearly by Con
