Segregation Protests
ATLANTA (UP) Georgia Tech
will ignore, a protest by influential
segregation supporters against the
Sugar Bowl game with Pittsburgh,
which has a Negro player..
"Our boys voted to play in the
Sugar Bowl and we will not break
our contract, especially since Geor
gia and Tech have played against
Negroes before and there has been
no criticism,' a spokesman said.
If Pitt uses second-string full
back Bobby Grler he will be the
first . Negro to play in a Sugar
Bowl football game but mixed
athletics In other sports is not new
to New Orleans.
Neither Sugar Bowl nor Tech of
ficials placed any racial conditions
in their post-season game, contract
and Pitt's Negro player attracted
little attention until the protest was
issued yesterday. ; .

The executive committee of the
States' Rights Council of Georgia,
Inc., . with membership Including
one member of the State Board of
Regents, sent Its protest to Georgia
Tech Coach Bobby Dodd.
Dodd declined to comment pub
licly but the spokesman said Tech
considered the matter to be "the
Sugar Bowl committee's business
they make the invitations."
Although no Negro has actually
played in a post-season Sugar Bowl
game the Loyola University basket
ball team has been meeting teams
with Negro players In games at
New Orleans.
New Orleans observers knew of
no state or local law such as exist
in Alabama prohibiting such mixed
sports contests.
Pitt football officials had already
announced they would ignore the
protest and said Grler may be the
starting fullback.
Grier will "sleep, eat, practice
and play" with the team during
Its training on the Tulane Univer
sity campus, and in any of Its off
campus recreational activities, a
spokesman said.

Lasalle without Tom Gola, Day
ton without Johnny Horan and
North Carolina State with Ron
Shavllk take to the courts tonight
as another long college basketball
season gets under way.
Lasalle, Dayton and North Caro
lina State are just part of the mob
that gets the collegians rolling in
their first big weekend 01 tne sea
sonbut they are the only repre
sentatives of the top 10 teams 01
last season to play tonight.
San Francisco. No. 1 in the final

tomorrow night against Chlco
State.
Lasalle, with three-time All
America Gola graduated and now
a pro. warms up against Millers-
vllle (Pa.) In its opener under new
Coach Jim Pollard, the former pro

Lasalle, ranked No. 3 behind
San Francisco and Kentucky in
last season's final poll, got a big
Jolt yesterday when Bob Maples,
one of its returning veterans,
broke an ankle in practice. He'll
be out two months.
North Carolina State, in good
standing after a season on proba
tion by the NCAA, is back In force.
The No. 4 team of 1954-'B5 opens
against Florida State with Shavllk,
second-team All America who
came Into his own In scoring and
rebounding, topping a club that
lost only two from last season's
starting five and is expected to
make the big noise in the Atlantic
Coast Conference.
Dayton, the NIT runner-up and
No. 9 in the final poll, Is rebuild
ing with Jack Bailee and Chris
Harris lost by graduation along
with Horan. The new squad gets
a test from touring Pepperdlne to

By OSCAR FRALEY
I'nlted Press Sports Writer
NEW YORK (UP) Roy Cam
panula Is one of the favorites for
the National League's most valu
able player award and you can
take It from Ty Cobb that the roly
poly catcher of the Brooklyn Dodg
ers really deserves such honors.
The Georgia Peach, first man
into the Hall of Fame, goes even
farther than that. He'll tell you
that "with a couple more years"
C(:npanella may belong on base-
Dans all-time team.
Cobb, who came East for a
Shrine affair, isn't putting the
knock on the modern ball players
with his old enthusiasm, ' however.
Not too far back, in a magazine
article, he found few good words
to say for the modern players.
It produced a quick bath in "hot
water." Now he has good words
for almost anybody you name, in
cluding such as Yogi Berra, Duke
snider and Ted Williams.
But only on Campanella and Phil
Rizzuto does he wax enthusiastic.
"It's very hard for anybody to
crack Into my all-time team,"
Cobb admits. "How can you beat
the likes of 'em. : . . i
NAMES TEAM
You wonder, too, when he names
as his choices outfielders Babe
Ruth, Tris Speaker and Shoeless
Joe Jackson; infieldera George
Sisler, Eddie Collins, Honus Wag
ner and fie Traynor; catchers
Mickey Cochrane and Bill Dickey,
and pitchers Walter Johnson,
G r o v e r Cleveland ' Alexander,
Christy Mathewson, Big Ed Walsh,
Eddie Plank and Lefty drove.
Just to show you what those
guys could do," Cobb said, "look
at Kid Nichols. He won 30 or more
games for seven consecutive
years. Some people may say that
Rogers Hornsby belongs on any
all-time team but he couldn't take
pop flies and go back Into the out
field like Collins."
But of the moderns, "who don't
exercise enough in the off-season
and are home run happy," Cobb
thinks that Campanella and Riz
zuto are fine all-time prospects.
He s a catcher, that Campan
ella," Cobb enthuses. "The mod
ems don't play long enough to
reach true greatness but with a
couple more years he should have
it made.
YANKEE HEART
"And that Rizzuto," he adds,
"He should be in there. -If there
ever was a shortstop, there Is one.
He was the heart of those great
Yankee ball clubs."
Ty admits oautlousty that Hall
of Fame selectors are reaching
a stage where lUls possiblersome
undeserving players may get into
the charmed circle because of
what amounts to a talent-less
popularity poll.
But Cobb will be 69 in December
and at long last It appears that
the all-time world champion of the
basepaths is losing some of his
fight.
"They could draw a line, at least
between the dead ball and the live
ball era," he said with equal cau
tion. "But don't go saying that I
said fellows like Campanella and
Rizzuto were the only ones who
are great today. Don't do that to
me."
