Republican Conservatives Try To Hold 7956 Race Open
WASHINGTON (DP) Repub
lican conservatives are discussing
ways to keep the 195J GOP presi
dential contest wide open until
President Eisenhower announces
bis political plans.
They fear that If Mi'. Eisenhower
decides not to run again and then
delay his announcement the GOP
convention next August might be
left with little choice but to nom
mate whoever Is favored by the
President or his principal party
supporters.
A highly placed Republican told
the United Press Monday that he
knows the subject is being dls.
cussed. But he added that he 16
unaware that any organized plan
is being developed.
He said sponsors of any such
plan are extremely wary of
launching It as long as they think
Mr. Elsenhower possibly might
seek a second term.
If Mr. Eisenhower should with
draw because of his heart attack
two months ago, some Republi
cans, such as Senate GOP Leader
William P. Knowland. want the
announcement early enough to
flvo other potential candidates
time for a pre-convention cam.
paipn.
On the other hand, the all-out
Eisenhower partisans have pro
tested against putting .pressure on
the President for au early deci
sion. There has been a recent up
surge of hope among these Re
publicans that he will run again.
Discussions of ways to keep the
contest oocn. pending an an
nouncement bv the President, has
centered on the proposed entry oi
"favorite son" candidates from a
number oi states. However, the
prospective favorite sons are re
luctant to step out as iong as Mr.
Elsenhower's plans are unknown.
Meanwhile, the newly - merged
AFL-CIO said In a special an
nouncement that it has invited
both Mr. Elsenhower and Demo
cratic presidential aspirant Adlai
E. Stevenson to address its lirst
convention In New York next
tnonth.
In 1952, both the AFL and CIO
endorsed Stevenson, who cam
paigned on a pledge to repeal the
