1'nlted Pre. Hollywood Writer
HOLLYWOOD (UP) Wanted for
television: Handsome actors, not
too young or too expensive, to hold
hands with Lorelta Young and Jane
Wyman.
Television has other shortages,
such as quizmasters who don't leer,
but the leading man situation
approaching disaster.
This is the big problem of Ruth
Burch, who is one of the most
sought-after women in television.
Miss Burch wields power over
5.000 actors every year. She's the
casting director for 16 filmed TV
shows. Including "You Are There,"
"Frontier," "Screen Directors
Playhouse," "The Bums and Allen
Show" and "Wyatt Earp."
Her worst headache, she decided
today, Is finding leading men for

TAKE POWDERS
LOS ANGELES iff) Instead of a
shower, five prisoners took a pow
der at Lincoln Heights Jail. Still
wearing street clothes, the five
were herded into the first tloor
shower room yesterday where
they climbed a ladder left by work
men and escaped unnoticed
through a window. All were either
charged or convicted of misde
meanor violations. They had been
ordered into the room to change
from civilian to jail garb.

Parts have to be cast for TV
shows with the speed of light,
which might account for the way
some of the plots turn out. Miss
Burch casts some shows, , like
"Make Room for Daddy," in an
hour at her desk that is stacked
with scripts, contracts and ringing
telephones. - - s
One day she called Frank Fay at
5 p.m. for "Screen Directors Play
house" and told him to report for
work the next morning att 8 o'clock.
"Once a girl was due en the set
at 9 a.m. but phoned at 8:30 a.m.
saying she was 111," says Miss
Burch. "I had another actress In
her place by 10 a.m. She learned
