Today's occupants of that so- called rocking chair say it ain't so. To be a top flight quarterback In the NFL you have to run, not sit. The concept of quarterbacklng among the pros has changed al most completely. Baugh and Sid Luckman were two of the greatest If not the greatest ever to pitch a ball in the NFL. They played In the stand ard T-formatlon, moving back in to the pocket protected by bruising linemen. They didn't have to run, only pass. Today, more and more of the pro coaches are adopting the spllt-T which calls for a versatile quarterback, one who can exercise the option of pass or run. Those quarterbacks who don t run, with one or two exceptions, are pilot ing josing teams. The statistics issued each week by the NFL reveal that the pros are playing a new game. More teams are using the running game and their quarterbacks are helping to carry the ground gaining bur den. The. latest figures show six teams have gained more on the ground than through the air. Sev eral others have recorded a fairly even balance between the run and pass. The Chicago Bears, tied for the Western Conference lead and the total offense leader in the NFL, have gained more on the ground than in the air. The revitalized Baltimore Colts have turned from a doormat to a title contender in the West. They have quarterback George Shaw, who in addition to passing, has gained 165 yards running. San Francisco: Y. A. Tittle has 53 for 15. Frisco has been a pre season title choice in the West for the past few years, Just like the Eagles in the East. Neither team has been able to cash in. Neither has running quarterbacks. Even the Los Angeles Rams, al though they are tied for the West ern Conference lead, have been un able to turn their great talent into a champion recently. Norm Van Brccklin is a top passer, but he's netted 21 yards, running with the ball. It all adds up to the obvious fact: Pro football has turned from the aerial circus to a more funda mental attack. And the fans must like it, since attendance this year has reached new record propor tions. PCL Directors In No Hurry To Name New Prexy SACRAMENTO, Calif. I Di rectors of the Pacific Coast Base ball League are in no hurry to accept Clair Goodwin's resignation as league president, says presi dent Fred David of the Sacra mento Solons. David said Wednesday he had talked by telephone with other di rectors and they agreed to wait until the Nov. 28 baseball meet ing in Columbus, O., before mak ing a decision. David said Ooodwin has done a "pretty fair job" since taking the S20,000-a-year Job a year ago. David said he talked by phone with Leslie O'Conner of Chicago, the league's attorney, now in Mex ico, and that O'Connor said he would consider the presidency if offered.
