Says Rote

Kyle Rote, a modest Texan who
first gained football fame at South
ern Methodist, claims his pass
catching feats for the New York
Giants this year are based on
Charlie Conerly's throwing ability.
- Bote has made catches off his
shoe strings. He has twisted and
caught balls thrown behind him.
He set up a touchdown last Sun
day by grabbing as pass while
Jesse Thomas- of the Baltimore
Colts virtually was riding him
"piggy-back."
But the 27-year-old San Antonio
blond says Conerly is mainly re
sponsible for 22 catches that have
gained 452 yards, better than 20
ards per catch, and five touch
liowns. "When I go out and make my
fake, he seems to know where I'm
going and puts the ball right there"
Rote said. .
- Rote first made a football repu
tation playing halfback for SMU
but the Giants have few good oK
fenslve ends this season and Rote
frequently has been asked to play
that unfamiliar position.
"I never played end before I
came to the Giants," he said. "But
I've been playing it pretty much
as a halfback most of the time,
I've been split out wide as a flank
er." The 27-year-old Texan has been
so busy catching passes that he
has carried the ball only four
times so far this season.
"I miss carrying the ball," he
said. "But we have some fine run
ners this year, fellows like Frank
Gilford and Alex Webster, so I've
been able to help more by catch
ing passes."
Rote's catching ability will be
one of New York's chief offensive
threats against the Philadelphia
Eagles at the Polo Grounds in one
of Sunday's six National Football
League games. The Giants (3-5)
are picked to defeat the Eagles
(3-4-1).

to sign with any promoter. The
exclusive contract which Norris'
International Boxing Club had with
Marciano expired recently and has

for divorce Thursday on grounds

British speedboat king Donald
Campbell today already was think
ing about trying to better the new
world's record mark of 218.2 miles
an hour he set Wednesday In the
Jet-propelled Bluebird II.
"But, I'd rather not talk too
much about that now," he said,
adding another try would have to
wait until next year.
Campbell. 34-year-old son of the
lnte Sir Malcolm Campbell whose
original Bluebird held the world
speedboat record from 1937 until
1949, pushed his craft to the "fan
tastic" speed of 239.5 miles an hour
on Lake Mead Wednesday Just be
fore the waters became too choppy
for such a run. The roughness held
him to 193.1 miles an hour on the
return run.
But his average was nearly 14
miles an hour faster than his rec
ord of 202.32 set last July at Lake
Ullswater, England.
He said the return trip was so
rough "it nearly tore my head
off."
Ty Acquitted
In Civil Suit
OROVILLE (UP) Ty Cobb,
the Georgia Peach of- baseball
fame, last night won a $50,000 civil
suit filed by -a wealthy rice grower
who said Cobb injured nun in a
fight over a dinner check.
A jury voted 9 to 3 In favor of
Cobb after deliberating S 1-2 hours.
The suit was filed by Elbert D.
Felts, a former player with the
San Francisco Seals of the Pacific
Coast League. He charged that
Cobb, 69. became angry at being
stuck with a dinner check and
attacked him.
Felts said the fight aggravated
a spinal injury. Cobb's . attorney
produced a Philadelphia doctor
who said he examined Felts and
testified he was suffering from
progressive arthritis.
Cobb said he paid the dinner
check in question because, "I was
host." He , claimed that It was
Felts who attacked him. ,
Campbell faced almost certain
death had anything gone wrong
during the high speed runs. John
Cobb, another British speed demon
was killed in Scotland three years
ago when his boat disintegrated
alter reaching 206.8 miles an hour.
Mario Verga, of Italy, was killed
last year Just before reaching 200

Campbell was confident, how
ever, because of his own previous
record mark and speeds of 200
miles art hour or better attained
in his trials here, during which

Wednesday's first run cracking
the "water barrier" of 200 miles
an hour was called "fantastic" by
chief timer Kent Hitchcock.
The two-and-a-half ton speedboat
moved over the course smoothly
on the east-west trip, but on the
return, after a quick refueling, the
Bluebird bucked and twisted over
the rising swells.
Campbell said ho" was thinking
about "some modifications that
might make the Bluebird a little
faster." He said he would be try
ing to get such ideas "on the draw
ing board" during the winter
months ahead after he returns to
England.

have the finest defense of any ma
jor college football team In the
country. But Navy Is right up close
in the No. 2 spot.
The Black Knights of West Point
lead the nation in total defense
with an average yield of 139.5
yards per game. They have yield
td only 1,116 yards in eight games
this season, according to the NCAA
Service Bureau
Navy, which has the traditional
date with Army in Philadelphia,
Nov. 2d, bas given up an average
of 169 yards per ' game, having
yielded a total of 1.352 yards In
eight games. Maryland ranks third
in total defense with an average
of 174.7 yards in nine games while
Auburn is fourth with a 181.5 aver
age and Holy Cross fifth with 186.5,

ing defense department. They have
given up only 578 yards on the
ground for an average of 72.3 yards
per game. Navy ranks no Better
