any member of the BPW Club. Other plays are "Picnic," Feb.
ruary 21 and "Sabrina Fair," on next April 10.

ALTURAS A check for $2,995,
976.12 has been sent to the state
treasurer as California's share ui
the cash revenues from the na
tional forests, according to a state
ment released by Charles A. Con
naughton, regional forester of the
U.S. Forest Service.
This payment represents 25 per
cent of the gross receipts from
the sales of timber, grazing fees
and othr land uses of the na
tional forests in California for the
year which ended June 30. As pro'
vided by law, the state apportions
tne money received to the coun
ties having national forest land
within their boundaries. Thirty'
nine of the slate's 58 counties will
thus receive funds for local school
and road expenditures.
The amount received by each
county is proportionate to the na
tional forest acreage in the coun
ty. Modoc County has been ap
portioned $219,933.39.
Oregon Senators Ask Probe Into West Boxcar Shortage
WASHINGTON (i Oregon's
aenatort Wednesday asked a con
gressional investigation of the box
car shortage and the adequacy of
Interstate Commerce Commission
(ICC) policing of car-short areas.
Bens. Morse and Neuberger,
Democrats, requested the healing
in a letter to Chairman Magnuson
D-Wash of the Senate Commerce
Oomlttee. -
It Is considered likely that Mag
nuson, now on the West Coast, will
call such a hearing shortly alter

Many Western Oregon mill op
erators, served solely by the South

ing from 3 to 60 per cent of their
box car needs, they said.
"The result Is that their sawmills
are operating at an average of
less than half capacity," the sen
ators continued. A great deal of
blame can be laid directly on the
railroads themselves, but these
failures do not relieve (be Inter

ing freight car facilities."
Morse and Neuberger also criti
cised what they called lack of ef
fective action by the ICO In letters
to Hugh W. Cross, commission

Neuberger said there "appears
to be a tendency to regard this as
a seasonal problem, whereas It
has blossomed Into a crisis that
exists the. year around."
Morse wrote: ,- ,
"The sad fact la that where
competition exists in rail freight
carriage, box cars are available
in ample quantities. Where the
Southern Facilic enjoys a monop
oly, almost invariably lumber ship
pers can be sure of one . thing
insufficient 'box cars."
The senators asked Magnuson's
committee to loox into four points:
"1. The failure of the Interstate
Commerce Commission to police
the discriminations In car service
practiced by the railroads In areas
wherein they operate as monopoly
rail carriers;
"J. The failure of the ICC and
the Department of Agriculture to
take adequate steps to prohioit the
use of box cars as mobile storage
bins in the shipment of grain under
the program of Commodity Credit
Corp.;
"3. Lack of any affirmative ac
tion by ICC to get lumber-hauling
trucks Into operation to move
backlogged lumber . . . ."
"4. Ability of regulatory agencies
to compel diversion of cars from
one or mora carriers into the serv
ice area- of a monopoly railroad
when a critical shortage exists."
