He first told police he broke into

Then yesterday Wlrths asked to
speak to a detective and authori
ties said he told this story:

hung around the 12-room Wood
ward house at Oyster Bay. occa
sionally peering In the windows.
He didn't keep close tabs on the
Utile, but figured it was sometime
bclwcen 1 and 2 a.m., that a man
and woman drove up and walked
from the garage to the house.

A branch of the tree broke under
his weight, he said, and police
reported finding the broken branch
when Wirths was taken back to
Ihe 60-ncre estate to reenact his
movements.
