CYRIL LICY) PALMER
o .in - "
Then
Anyone who examined the record
of Cyril L. (Cy) Palmer, Klamath
Falls manager tor the United Air
Lines, would certainly agree that
some of his experiences lend con
vincing proof to Lord Byron's con
tention that "truth is stranger than
liction."
For instance, Palmer attended
13 grade schools in four years. He
matriculated in such places as
Driver Killed
Near Gazelle
WEED Ira Thomas Thompson.
61, of Mount Shasta, was killed
about 8 p.m. Friday when the
northbound pickup truck he was
driving struck a bridge near Ga
zelle and catapulted on to the top
of a southbound Pierce Freight
Lines truck driven by Robert Glen
Cosier, Medford.
Thompson's pickup struck the
abutment of the bridge and rolling
over several times before it
bounced on top of the truck, catch'
ing fire as It lay on the top of
the cab-over freight truck-tractor.
As soon as Cosier could bring the
truck to a stop he attempted to
pull Thompson from the cab of his
pickup but was unable to rescue
him. The Siskiyou County coroner

EARTHQUAKE
EUREKA (UP) A mild earth
quake that rattled dishes but
caused no damage was felt here
at 8:47 p.m. last night.
Havana, Cuba and In various
schools In Florida, Texas and
Georgia. However, he started high
school in Kansas City and was
graduated there.
Palmer's ambulatory educational
routine resulted from the fact that
his father was traveling salesman
covering a wide territory and the
lamuy moved around witniim.
While Palmer was in his senior
year in high school, he became a
member of the Auditorium Theater
Stock Company in Kansas City and
played juvenile roles in such pro
ductions as "Forty-five Minutes
From Broadway," "Turn to the
Right" and the "Servant in the
House."
SKATING INSTRUCTOR
During the same period, he
worked as a skate boy In the
Coliseum Skating Rink in Kansas
City and later spent a couple ol
years as a skating mstructor.
In 1916, Palmer enrolled in the
University of Kansas but his edu
cation was interrupted by a call
to service in World War I.
At the conclusion of the Euro
pean hostilities, Palmer went back
to show business. He organized an
orchestra known as "Coloradoans"
and toured the Middle West. He
played the violin.
In 1924, Palmer was engaged by
Paramount-Publix Theaters to aci
as master of ceremonies for stage
shows presented in various theaters
throughout the Middle West. He
still played the violin and often
crossed the path of another fam
ous fiddler Jack Benny. Movie
star Ginger Rogers sang one sea
son with his band.
FIDDLED AROUND
; "I fiddled around about as long
as Benny," Palmer said. "But in
1928, I got out of show business.
I believe I can still play the violin
as good as BeDny from what I
have heard in recent years on the
radio."
After deserting the footlights,
Palmer turned to the business end
of aviation for a new career. In
1928. he was employed as field
agent at Oklahoma City for Na-
Now
lional Air Transport. He stayed
with that firm until 1931 when it
became a part of the newly-or
ganized United Air Lines.
Palmer has been with United
Air Lines ever since. He has acted
manager in Toledo, Ohio,
Youngstown, Ohio, Fresno, Cali
fornia, Twin Falls, Idaho, Salinas,
Caiuorma and Klamath Falls.
In keeping with his pattern of
lite, rainier soon win be on the
move again. In a couple of weeks
he is slated to return to Salinas
as United field manager.
