NEW YORK (UP) There are,
as you probably will admit' with
great sadness, all kinds of systems
for playing the horses.
These include ,tlie alphabet,
Chinese and hat-pin systems as
well as such "law of averages"
routines as wagering on certain
trainers or a particular stable.
Then there Is that delight of the
ladles, betting on the favorite to
show.
And, in a certain set, nobody
with any brains bets on anybody
but the jockey.
Well, if you are one of these, you
can have a field day when they
run the Washington, D.C Interna
tional at Laurel Park race course
in Maryland on Nov. 11.
JOCKEYS GALORE ' '

half turf rase, from a walk-up start
those who like to put their deuce
on the schnozzola of the little men
in silks will have available the
best riders of six nations, namely
the United States, Ireland, Eng
land, France, Germany and
Texas. ......
Representing the United States
will be Wee Willie Shoemaker,
Eddie Arcaro, Johnny Longden
and longshot booter Eric Guerin,
That', in itself, is enough to make
most jockey bettors take a close
second, and even third, look. Willie
the Shoe at 24 already is accepted
as one of the greatest riders of all
time. It was Texas Willie who set
a new all-time record of 485 wins
last year and he'll ride England's
well-liked Darius in this one.
But Arcaro still is the acknowl
edged peer of stakes riders, and
39-year-old Eddie will pilot Cliff
Mooers' Traffic Judge. Then there
Is the 45-year-old Longden, with
more victories than any other ac
tive jockey, handling Canada's
Prefect, trained, unusually enough,
by Longden's son. Vance. Guerin,
whose mount, Social Outcast, may
not start, is great with those out
siders. FOREIGN RIDERS
If the Jockey - bettors are tired
of the home crop, however, there
are ' some great riders available
from abroad.
Rae Johnstone, winner of 27 for
eign classics who will be aboard
France's Plcounda. is the oldest
rider at 50. In recent years he has
"lammed both the English and
French derbies.
the youngest is Tom Burns, at
20 Ireland's best. He'll ride Irish
President Sean O'Kelly's Pana
slipper at the emphatic request
of the Irish peoole. Lester Piggott,
one of England's best, originally
was slated for that mount but the
home folks raised caln and he was
reolaced.
Piggott Instead will handle Eng
land's Nucleus. One of the strange
facets of the race is that Nucleus
Is owned, trained and exercised by
women. Mrs. Dorothy Paget owns
the colt, which is trained by Mrs.
Helen Houghton and exercised by
her 20-year-old daughter Dawn.
Walt Held, two-time leading
German rider, will be up on his
nation's hopeful, Atalurk, and the
final entry in the nine-horse field
will be Trance's Mahan. ridden by
veteran Jockey Fred Palmer, who
at 33 has been riding for 17 years.
It's a lot of talent on one track,
whether from a standpoint of men
or horses. And the people who bet
on Jockeys are going to have a
tough time making up their alleged
minds.

The National Football League's
Western Conference generally has
been regarded as the strongest and
best - balanced during recent
years, but the Eastern section
holds a 3-1 edge in the Inter-divl-sion
games played so far this sea
son. Each club plays two games
against teams from the opposite
division : to round out a 12-game
schedule. So the Western huskies
still may come out ahead In the
1955 inter-dlvlsion competition be
fore the division champions' clash
for the league title.
The Cleveland Browns, defend
ing league and Eastern Division
titlebolders, are mainly responsi
ble (or the East's good start
against the Western clubs this fall.
Cleveland, which lost to Western
Division teams three straight yeSrs
in the championship game before
crusning Detroit in the 1954 title
contest, has played Ita two 1955
games with Western Division
teams. The Brownies swept both
without giving up a touchdown
from scrimmage.
Cleveland limited the San Fran
cisco Forty . Niners to a field goal
In a 38-3 rout and knocked the
Green Bay Packers out of first
place two weeks ago while winning
41-10. Green Bay got Its points on
a field goal and Al Carmichael's
100-yard dash with a klckoff.
Lisle Blackbourn, who has been
coaching the Packers since the
beginning of the 1954 . season, in
dicated after that game he ' Is
happy Cleveland is not ' in the
Western Conference.
"That was the best ball club,
that day, we've played since I've
been In the league," Blackbourn

also helped decide the outcome.
The action begins Saturday
night when the Baltimore Colts
(4-2) invade Detroit for a Western
Division game against the Lions
1 0-6) and the Steelers (4-2) visit
Chicago for an Eastern Division
contest with the Cardinals (2-3-1).
The Lions and Cardinals are picked
to win.
The other eight teams clash on
Sunday. The selections with sea
son records in parentheses:
Bears (3-3) over Green Bay
Packera (3-3) at Chicago; Browns
(6-1) over New York Giants (2-4)
at Cleveland; Rams (4-3) over San
Francisco Forty - Niners (3-3) at
Los Angeles; Philadelphia Eagles
