New Highway
To Be Opened
SALEM IB The entire Portland
Salem expressway will be opened
- to light traffic on Tuesday, Nov. 1,
Siate- Highway Engineer R. H.
Baldock announced Monday, after
inspecting ii.
The new section, between Salem
and Wilsonvllle, will be opened at
that time. The section between
Wilsonvllle and West Portland has
been open for several months.

section will be limited to gross
loans unaer lo.oou pounds. Of that
distance. 16 miles will be four
lanes, and 10 miles will be two
lanes.
Baldock explained that paving
of the entire four lanes will not
oe completed until next Aug. 1.
The opposing traffic lanes are
50 feet apart, and the section from
Salem to Wilsonvllle is almost as
straight as an arrow.
Each lane is H feet wide, with
lu-iooc snouiaers.

The new route will be designated
as U.S. Highway 99.
Baldock also announced that
multiflora roses, the so called
living fence, will be planted In the
50-foot area between the opposing
lanes.
Over the entire 26-mile distance
oi tne new section, there Is only
one point of access. That is near
Woodbum.
The road has a 20-inch gravel
base, topped by four Inches of
asphaltic concrete. .

community in 1878. He has about
550 head of cattle.
The committee of Judges which
picked him praised his "immeas
urable energy, ability, foresiphied-i
ness, pride and intense interest."

US Population Up Again As Shift To West Gain
WASHINGTON (UP) The
rapidly-growing population of the
United States spurted another 7
per cent between 1950 and 1954 to
an unprecedented 163,409.01X1.
The Census Bureau reported yes
terday that all but seven states
shared In the increase. These
states were Maine, Vermont. West
Virginia, Alabama. Mississippi, Ar
kansas and Oklahoma.
Gains by other stales ranged
from l.l per cent for Kentucky to
31 per cent for Nevada.
The Census Bureau said the na
tion's population rose from 150 -67.361
on April 1. 1950, to about
162.409.00U on July 1, 1954.
As in earlier years, the Census
Bureau estimates showed a mount
ing population shift toward the
Par West. .
Alaska led all states and terri
tories in the rue of Increase.
Atier adjustments for the heavy
inllux of seasonal labor. It showed
an amazing 63 per cent rise tor
the four years. As of July 1, 1954.
the population of Alaska stood at
en estimated 208.000.
The seven states showing do
creases for the 1950-1954 period
lost citizens mostly because of mi
grations to v other areas of the
country. The Pacific Coast, par
ticularly California, appeared to be
'he chief destination of the mi
grants. During the four-year period.
California's population rose 18.1
per cent to 12.600.000. an addition
of 1.914,000 persons. Nevada, cen
ter of the divorce and gambling
business, enjoyed an Increase from
160.083 in 1950 to 310.000 last year.
Arizona followed Nevada per-centace-wise.
Its population
Jumped 53.8 per cent from 149.587
to 928.000.
Other sizable Increases were
10.3 per cent for Michigan: 16.7
for Delaware; 11 for Maryland:
191 lor Florida; lo for Texas; and
10.6 for Utah. t
