Howard Hall will start a class in
art, Tuesday nifiht, October 25 at
7 p.m. Fee is $5 for 20 hours of
instruction. Classes will meet two
hours, one night a week for 10
weeks.

say automation will create new
Jobs."
"It's a deliberate way, of fooling
the public," be told a Senate
House subcommittee studying the
impact of the growing use of auto
matic devices in factories and offices.

nounced Monday by General Mo
tors' Chevrolet division.
The new cars go on dealer dis
play Nov. 4.
The suggested factory list price
increase ranges from (49.25 to
$.84.25.
Directional signals became
standard equipment. They were
sold at extra cost in 195S.
Chevrolet also announced a $125
reduotion In price of its air con
ditioning unit to $400. The optional
power package which, when ap
plied to the V-8 furnishes
horsepower in the line, was
duced from $55 to $30.
Carey, who also is secretary
treasurer of the CIO, said output
and sales in the electrical and re
lated industries were soaring
"But employment goes down." As
automation increases, he' contend
ed, more money must find its way
into workers' pockets or the na
tion faces "inevitable depression."
Sen. Flanders (R-Vt) said the
introduction of mass or continu
ousproduction about 50 years ago
resulted in shorter hours and high
er wages. He said he wouldn't be
"disturbed" If automation also con
tributed to short hours and higher
wnges at no higher prices. '
"I agree," Carey said, "and
prices should go down."
Another witness, William W.
Barton, president of W. F. and
John Barnes Co., a machine tool
manufacturing plant in Rockford,
III., said "automation always has
been with us and is the backbone
of our economic progress."

land farm.
There was a mixup when the
cattle arrived, though. A neighbor
thought some of the senator's cattle
were being stolen and called police.
One of the three men who
brought the cattle to the Morse
farm here identitied himself as
Edward Lurty. a District of Co
lumbia police lieutenant who made
the trip wnue on leave.
French To Accept
Viet Nam Vote
PARIS W A Foreign Office
spokesman said Monday the
French government will accept the
results of Sunday's referendum in
South Viet Nam and recognize
Premier Ngo Dinh Diem as new
chiel of state.
The decision represents a sharp
turn in policy for France, which
has supported' former Emperor
Bao Dal, who was Installed as
chief of state by the French in
1949. Since then he has spent most
of his time in this country.

Pair Injured In
Auto Accident
Two perrons were slightly in
jured shortly after midnight Sun
day morning when the auto in
which they were riding went out
of control and Into the ditcn on
U.S. Highway 97 near the Califor
nia border. '
The suto went out of control aft
er the accclleiator became stuck
when the car was travelling at
about 60 miles per hour, Oregon
state police reported today.
The injured, Merle Nelson. 19,
and Clarence Pierce, 22, both of
Dorris, were taken to Klamath Val
ley Hospital via Kalers ambulance,
where they were treated and released.
