Industrialists See New High
Business Activity In 1956
HOT 8PRINGS, Va. 1X1 Toil-
ranking Industrialists today fore
cast high-level business activity
extending well Into 1956 at least.
Several members of the Busi
ness Advisory Council, beginning
a two-day, closeo-aoor conierence
here wllh Secretary of Commerce
Weeks, told reporters they expect
no economic sinking spell to result
from President Eisenhowers Ill
ness.
While avoiding quotation on the
question, because of Us political
aspects, most 01 tne inoustry men
interviewed discounted "loss of
confidence" as a factor which
might produce a setback. In busi
ness or employment.
Business continence in me Elsen
hower administration undoubtedly
helped business override the mild
recession of 1953-54, one corpora
tion president said, "but there's
still lots ot contidence today."
The head of a major Investment
house dismissed a reporter's ques
tion about the stock market's "blue
Mondays" altar Elsenhower's
heart . attack with the reply
"That's just speculation."
Others pointed to major expan
sfons in the auto, atomic, airlines,
power and metals Industries an
nounced In recent weeks as evi
dence that confidence in stable
economic growth has not been
shaken.
Most council members expect an
unprecedented Christmas buying
reason and profess to see no rea
son for a subsequent letdown, in
view of three signlllcant third-
quarter figures released Wednes
day by the President's Coflncil of
Economic Advisers. Personal in
come climbed to a rate of 306
billion dollars annually, consumer
spending rose to a 256 billion rate
and total production went to 392 1
billion each , a record.
The towering total of consumer
credit appeared to be a major
concern of the council, however.
Members hoped to get answers
here nn two aspects of that prob
lem fii at. whether the installment
buying binge is an inflationary
hazard and second whether the
administration's efforts to curb
credit Inflation have gone so far
as to be a possible depressant on
business. I
The council has been advising
the secretary of commerce under
both Democratic and Republican
administrations for the last 22
years.
