of whom were children. The brief
announcement said the sleeping
sickness epidemic has apparently
ended. The highest encephalitis toll
was recorded in 1949 when 2,729
persons died.

Time was when anyone who
mentioned the phrase "Christmas
comes but once a year" followed
it with, "Thank goodness!" But all
that is changed now, since the
companies who provide us with the
bulk of our Christinas gifts have
also taken over the work we used
to have to do between buying and
giving the complicated, time
consuming job of gift wrapping
and decorating.

and pie filling mix.
i cup molasses
2'2 cups milk
is teaspoon salt
1 egg yolk
1 egg white
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cun lieht nream
'i teaspoon peppermint extract
Combine pudding mix, molasses,
V. cup of the milk, and salt in
saucepan. Add egg yollc and blend
well. Then add remaining 2l cups
milk. Cook and stir over medium
heat until mixture comes to a
full boil. Remove from heat.
Beat egg white until foamv
throughout. Add 2 tablespoons su
gar, a tablespoon at a time, beat
ing after each addition until su
gar Is blended. Then coritlnue
beating until this meringue mix
ture will stand in peaks. Add hot
pudding gradually. .Then stir in
cream and peppermint extract.
Pour into freezing trays of refrig
erator and set control for coldest
freezing temperature. Freeze un
til almost firm. Then pour mixture
Into bowl and beat with egg beater
or mixer until smooth, but not
melted. Return to tray and freeze
until firm. Freezing time: 4 to 5
hours.
