of the Lemunans, believed to be

John W. Chamberlin, reporter on
the Siskiyou Daily News, said that
last weekend's trip was above the
7,000 foot level on the peak, which
tops 14.000 feet above sea level.
The names of persons accompany
ing him were not announced.
Before leaving, he aaid that be
hoped "to come upon some evi
dence maybe some old rums
to substantiate the many reports
of scientists and other persons,
that a race called the Lemurians.
or some other ancient pecpie, did
live on or in the mountain.

what many hare surmised are des

Chamberlin points to unexplained
hieroglyphics found on the rocks of
a peninsula on Klamath Lake which
might be the remains of the ancient
Lemurians.
He says that the stories all have
much in common, even though
their origin varies.
He a bo says . that mountain
climbers in some areas of Mount
Shasta claim that they ran into
areas where they were unable to
go in any direction other than the
way they came. He tells the stories
of the mysterious mist that would
rise during forest fires and turn
them back from certain areas and
leave areas of trees unburned.
All of these things Chamberlin
says, could be attributed to the
Lemurians.
On the other hand, moil scien.
tists and other experts have tended
to pooh-pooh the Lemurian legend,
which 'has been repealed both by
Indians and , white men. "Who is
right? Chamberlin says he intends
to find out.

Defense Exercise
Plans Announced
WASHINGTON ( The United
States and Canada Tuesday
nounced simultaneously plans to
conduct joint air defense exer
cises this winter.
Tne Department of Defense des
ignated the operation as "Crackar
Jack" and said the exercises would
involve the air defense systems in
both Canada and the United
States, presumably including the
Distant Early Warning radar line
now under construction ner the
Arctic Circle.
Purpose of the exercise la to nro-
vlde radar tracking and intercept
practice for defense forces during
winter weather. The U.S. Strateg
ic Air Command will be used to
test the defenses.
