introduced at the meeting. They

Mediator Seeks
Phone Strike End
SAN FRANCISCO (UP) Feder
al Mediator Arthur Vlat made
another attempt today to end a
week-long strike against the Pac
ific Telephona and Telegraph Com
pany in Northern California and
Nevada.
Vlat asked negotiators for the
PT&-T and the CIO Communica
tions Workers of America to meet
with him today. An initial round
of 'conciliation talks ended last
Saturday with both sictes "at the
same place they were - when the
strike began."
The strike began last Monday
when 17,500 members of the CIO
CWA and 450O commercial and
accounting employes belonging to
two independent unions left their
Jobs to back demands for higher
wages.
Dial service has functioned
smoothly, but long distance and
manual calls have been subject
to delays.

elected president of his ruling
Democratic Party early Monday
by an overwhelming majority
despite a revolt acniiist his leader
ship by 19 party members in
parliament.
A total of 1,254 delegates to the
party congress voted for the 56-year-old
prime minister. The num
ber of votes against him was not
reported but less than 1,500 dele
gates atended the congress.

Woman Dies From
Crash Injuries

It was Portland's 29th traffic
fatality of the year.
The driver of the car. Identified
as Edward M. Bombrowe. 21, of
Amboy, Wash., was cited for fail

pedestrian, police said.
