snow goose has very plainly marked black edges on the wings.
The swan will average better than 20 pounds as compared to

A SWAN IN FLIGHT is a beautiful sight as he soars high over
the marshes and grasslands of the Basin, his high, flutelike call
carrying for miles as he sweeps by overhead. Hunters ere
again cautioned to take an extra look before shooting to make
sure they are not mistaking this big, majestic bird for the
smaller snow goose which is legal fare for the scattergunner.
The swan is marked not only by his great site but by black
feet and bill and the ebsence of the black wing tips of the
snow goose. This bird was snapped in flight over the Red Rock
area in Montane. The big birds use almost all water areas of
the Basin at this time of year.

THIS ARTIST'S CONCEPTION of the proposed new Sixth
Street viaduct over the Southern Pacific tracks was released
by the State Highway Department. According to R. H, Baldock,
bids will be advertised for the November meeting of the Ore
gon Highway Commission, providing arrangements for the
location of the overpass can be completed with the Southern
Pacific. Plans for the viaduct have been completed. Joe Toole,
resident engineer for the department in Klamath Falls said that
traffic will use the old viaduct during most of the construction
time, as the new one is located a short distance south of the
old one. However, during the final stages of construction, it
might be necessary to detour traffic for a short time, he said.
He added that if the contract is let at the November 2 meeting
of the commission, the viaduct should be completed some time
next fall. The sketch shows how traffic will be routed in the
vicinity of Sixth and Broad, Market and Spring streets. Sixth
street wil! be widened slightly as far as Commercial street,
where traffic headed toward town will be rerouted to Seventh
Street will be widened slightly as far as commercial Street,
Commercial to the downtown area. In the area of the off and
on ramps at Sixth and Broad, present plans call for land
scaping, which serves the dual purpose of beautifying the area
and preventing erosion on the built up fill. There will be little
change at the Adams Street end of the Viaduct, except for
some channelization of traffic. Total cost of the project is
estimated by Toole in the vicinity of three quarters of a million
dollars, who said that an original estimate of $645,000 has
become out of data- due to increased costs and additions to
the project. The four-lane bridge will be built of concrete
reinforced by steel girders, while the approach ramps will
be on fill.

Holds Meeting
The Marantha Missionary Society
of the Bible Baptist Church met
at the home of Mrs. Lcona San
ders with her mother, Mrs. Em
ma Judd as co-hostess. Devotions
were given by Mrs. Freeman
Schmidt, wife of the pastor.
The program was in charge of
Mrs. Nina Shannon, on the topic,

ERUPTION
KAGOSHIMA, Japan Ijn Saku-
rajima volcano on Japan's south
ern tip erupted Saturday for the
fifth lime since Thursday. The
eruption sent a mammoth cloud
of smoke high into the air. No
damage was reported. Thursday's
eruption injured four college stu
dents, two of them seriously.

Jimenez pleaded guilty and re
ceived a fine of $105 or 60 days in
the county jail for being drunk In
and about an auto. His partner,
Gllbcri Lara, 34, Mt. Hebron, ar
rested fur driving while intoxicat
ed and for having no operators li
cense, pleaded guilty and was sen
tenced to serve 150 days or pay a
fine of S3 15.
Both will serve the time in the
county Jail at Yreka.
