Klamath AAUW Plans Meeting
The October meeting ot the
American Association of University
Women will be held October 15 in
UK Willard Hotel at 12 30 p.m.
The rsllowship Tea, usually held

be part of the program this year,

LAKE VIEW Since hunting sea

four small forest fires have been I

Alturas Sheriff
Recovers Car
ALTURAS Sheriff's office of
ficials have recovered a 1953 Chev
rolet automobile reported stolen
from James R. McLoughliii at
Canby on Sunday, October 9.

found the car abandoned about
nine mil's east of Badger Wells
about 3 3D p.m. Monday. He stat
ed he believes the car was taken
by juveniles.
Durante To Present Last Film Made By Carmen Miranda
HOLLYWOOD (UP) Jimmy Du
ranle,' "because she would have

day presents the late Carmen Mir
anda's last periormance.
The Brasillan Bombshell filmed
the NBC-TV program wjth Durante
in August. She faltered during the
show. A few hours later she was
dead of a heart attack. ,
"We know she would have want
ed the millions ot people who love
her to see this show," Durante ex-1
plained today. "And we got a tele
gram from her family tellin us
to use it." ' ,
On the program, televislon'vlew
ers will see that Carmen slipped
to rone knee at the end of a stren
uous mambo routine with Durante
and Eddie Jackson.
Sue recovered quickly, stood up
and laughed to Durante, "I can't
catch my breath, you take my
lines."
A close-up of the tragic moment
originally had been shot. But when
it showed pain on her face, a cov
ering long-.hot was substituted.
NBC's first thought had been to
shelve the show. But viewers "sent
in an enormous amount of mail,"
according to Bill Harmon, produc
er of the program
. "We weren't sure whether it was
good tasie to show the film," the
producer said. "But after the 'let
ters came In, and her family re
quested the program bo used, we
had a conference with the sponsor
and decided to run It. We held
back the show until now so It
wouldn't look as if we were cap
italizing on anything.
"Jimmy felt If anything hap
pened o him he'd want people to
see his last show. That's true of
any performer."
