Student Takes
Honors Course
John Shaw, pi earned freshman at
the University of Oregon and the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde E
Shaw. 338 Mortimer, has qualified
for the new Sophomore Honors
course. Shaw is a 19o5 graduate
oi Klamath union High School
The university reports that the
new course is a basic training in
the maui branches of liberal stU'
dy. Its purpose is to provide prof
itable aad stimulating general edu
cation, especially for the abler
students of the school. Only the
students in the top 20 per cent of
the entrance examination rolls are
permitted to enroll.
The course is designed to lay a
broad foundation for more ad
vanced work in both liberal and
professional fields, the university
states. It fills that cart of a stu
dent's schedule normally devoted
to fulfillment of group require
ments. The course is for the first
two years In college and consists
of 39 hours.
Honors ?.re awarded at the end
of the sophomore year-hence the
name of the course. The awards
are based on a series of exams
in four liberal fields.
The schol release stales that
most pre-med students usually sub
stitute the honors course in phy
sical science tr,i r e k u 1 a r in
troductory couises in phsycis and
chemistry..
Shaw is a pledge at the Sigma
phi Epsilon fraternity. .

President Plans New Appeal To Reds For Blueprint Swaps

Eisenhower is making a new ap
peal to Russia to support Ills plan
to swap military blueprints and ar
range aerial survey flights over
both countries, administration offi
cials said today.
Officials saidt the new bid for
Russian support is an important
part of the President's "interim"
reply to Premier Nikolai Bul
ganin's Sept. 19 letter on disarma

that the fatal injury of James Dean.
24-year-old movie star, in a two
car collision Sept. 30 was "acci
dental death with no criminal neg
ligence." At the inquest, California High
way Patrolman O. Hunter testi
fied Dean's sports car was travel
ing 85 miles an hour when he
stopped him near Bakersfield the
afternoon of the accident and gave
him a speeding ticket.
Other witnesses said Dean was
going 73 m.p.h just before the fa
