Canada Expected
To Urge A-Ties
UNITED NATIONS, N. Y. uTI 1
IVplomats looked today for Canada
to urge closer 0.N, ties ior the
proposed atoms-for-peaco agency
than those suggested by the United
States. ,
They predicted Canadian Dele.
Sate PpuI Martin would take this
stand In his appearance in the
atomic energy debate before the
U.N. Assembly's lop Political Com
mittee this afternoon.
The United States, with British
support, has insisted that the body
should be similar to a specialized
agency and not too closely linked
to the U.N.
Observers recalled that Canada's
Foreign Secretary Lester B.
Pearson and other Ottawa govern
ment leaders hsve stressed re
peatedly that the U.N. should not
be b. passed when the proposed
atomic ajency is finally set up.
The United States, Canada and
seven other powers have drawn
up a dralt statute for the agency
and distributed it to all govern
ments for comment. The draft has
left open the question of U.N. ties.
India and a number of smaller
countries want the agency subject
to recommendations ot tne u.N.
Assembly.
