LEFT THE HOUSE 8IGHT AFTER
Judy Garland
On Ford Jubilee TV Program
By ALINE MOSBY

HOLLYWOOD (UP)-rJudy Oar.
land will make her television de
but tomorrow night and, as usual
with the dynamic performer, there
will be aa much drama behind the
cameras as In front.
The singer, regarded as one of
the greatest entertainers, brings
to the CBS-TV Ford Jubilee (6:30
p.m. POT) her rente that brought
raves at the Palace Theater In
New York and at the London Pal'
ladlum.
And, as when she made her
much publicised movie, "A Star
I Born," Judy's show has become
an unusual production at CBS' big
studios, she and husband Sid Luft
are receiving 1125,000 for the one
nlftht stand more, according to
CBS, than any single performer
has collected for entertaining on
the horns screens,
Judy has been rehearsing at
night, a precedent at CB8. She
still has trouble keeping daytime
working hours. Because she Is: new
to TV, a special monitor (at $5,000
an hour) was brought In during
her camera tests so she could sec
herself on color TV. '
Judy , Is rated a special enter
tainer, too, so CBS broke another
rule and will let a live audience
view the show. That will cost $10,
coo for special equipment because
of fire laws.
"Judy didn't want canned lauih.
lei' and applause. She wanted peo
ple,- explained associate producer
Bernl Could.

But, he added, the star "has
been extremely cooperative.
"We heard rumors about how
difficult she was, but It's not true,"
ho said. "We kept a flexible sched
ule expecting trouble, but she's
been wonderful.
"Of course, this girl knows more
sbout show business than anybody.
If she asked why you're making
a camera move you better know
why. But we've won half the argu
ments, and she's won half, and
you can't ask for a better deal."
Judy confessed she's "scared"
about her TV debut.
"I won't know which camera to
look at," ahe laughed as she
watched a camera rehearsal. "I'll
get such stage fright. Oh, yes, I
always feel whoozy before I go
on."
"I know I'm heavy," she added,
looking at her figure In her gray
slacks and yellow blouse. "I don't
care any more. I feel better this
way." :
Judy gave up her touring stage
show to go on TV but says, "I'd
like to be shot before Saturday. -
TV is insane confusion, but It s
a great medium. I'd love to do
more. But that depends on how
TV feels about me," she said with
one eye. on the bustling rehearsal.
