"Boner"
Ups Odds
For Rock
By JACK CL'HDY
I'nltrd Frew Sporti Writer
NEW YORK (UP) The "boner"
postponement that sends Rocky
Murciano end Archie Moore into
the ring tonight for their heavy
weight championship fight left the
odds unchanged at 4-1 but may
boost the gate toward $900,000.
With the weather lid lilted by a
foiecast of "cool and fair," offi
cials of the International Boxing
Club figured today's rush of ticket
hiivuM mlztit swell the crowd at
Venltee Stadium to 70.000. Fresh
sales were In the' ratio of nearly
6-1 to refunds.
Despite challenger Moore s
nervousness during J uesnay s pny
sical examination and tho general
belief that the 24-hour delay would
bother him more than the "Ice
cold chnnipion," the betting price
remained suite.
Unbeaten Marclano and the 38
vcnr-old lluht heavyweight cham
pion were slated for another physi
cal exam today,; but they need not
undergo , the oroeaj- oi onouicr
weigh-in.
Their respective trainers pointed
out that the weights Tuesday
Rocky 188', and Archie 188 were
about wtint was expected.
DKFKRRKt
Muny boxing men figured pro
moter Jim Norrls had punco a
prize boner" Tuesday when he de
ferred tho flKht 24 hours because
of a bad-weather threat that never
materialized. He announced tno
washout at 10 a.m., but less than
an hour later the skies were clear
ing and Hurricane lone veered out
to sea. It was the first time an
Important title bout had been post
poned before the welgh-in.
Norrls denied any boner. He ex
plained: "I would do it again. We
had no choice. Forecasts from all
weather bureaus government,
Navy and flying fields were
hopelessly gloomy. And we were
being bombarded by railroads and
all- companies for Instructions
whether to start their special fight
trains and planes for New York."
Before tho box-offices reopened
this morning, Norrls said the ticket
sale was slightly more than WOO,
000. He expected a rush today and
until fight-time tonight at the sta
dium for medium-priced 120 and
30 tickets. In addition, 8,000 gen
eral admission Is scats will go on
sale at the stndlum nt 7 p.m.
STARTING TIME
Tonight's starting time was set
back 15 minutes to 10:45 p.m. to
avoid conflict with the regularly
scheduled Wednesday night home
TV scrap between middleweight
ouuu.v vjkva aim wtuigin vuiuuwi
at Mlnml Beach.
There will be no home telecast
of the Mnrclano-Moore bout, but
H will be broadcast nationally over
ABO networks and to several for
eign countries.
Should Moore's long, solid left
labs and stunning "sneaker"
rihts achieve an upset victory to
night, a private contract provides
that he must make his first de
fense against Rocky in a return
bout next June, It would bring his
10-ycar rocord toTJl'M-S. He al
ready has r2 knockouts, but has
been stopped four times.
Marclano, recking is 49th con
set utlvn professional : victory and
43rd knockout, Is an" aggressive,
explosive, short - armed slugger
who Is unusually rugged: He has
been floored but once, However,
he has been cut several times and
la known as a "quicic bleeder,"

NEW YORK (NEA) If Archie
Moore attempts to take out Rocky
Marclano early, you're going to
see a cyclonic start at Yankee
Stadium tonight,
Moore figures to be far past his
peak at an admitted 38. but is
such an extraordinary character
that anything the gypsy does will
not surprise a lot of people.
Theoretically, the erosion Is sup
posed to have set In on Marclano,
too, at 31 physically, spiritually
and mentally although not to any
great degree.
Under normal circumstances.
The Rock might have had fo light
off complacency In the sixth de
fense of the title, the second this
year.
Building the fight, In what prob
ably has been the finest one-man
ballyhoo campaign In history,
Moore took that problem off the
champion's hands.
It Is extremely difficult for the
soft-spoken Marciano to put the
rap on anybody, especially on op
ponent he respects, but there Isn't
any question that he has been riled
by Moore's Jibes.
"I'll be lookln' to hurt him," he
remarked after a workout at Gros
singer, in which h never looked
so good.
It's all right for Marclano to
say that he hasn't minded all the
things Moore has said about him
everything up to dlsectlng the
Block Buster.
"What's the difference," he, tells
the ordinary Interviewer, "as long
as It helps the gate?"
But those closest to Marclano
know he Is seething inwardly.
It was when his old pals of
the Brockton street corner asked,
"Yuh ain't ascared to fight this
guy, are you. Rock?" that Marci
ano would have signed for the
match even had another challeng
er been more acceptable to Al
Weill.
"I want this guy bad," The Rock
tells Intimates. Circling among
those called Into the room while
Marclano is being rubbed they
are the ones he likes to talk to
you hear other little. ' remarks
dropped by the doe-eyed Italian
which give you a good Idea of his
frame of mind. Such as: "Tills guy
is talking himself Into the worst
licking of his life. People have to
eat words. I'd like to catch him
with his mouth open."
When Tony Oalento remarked
that Marclano should talk more
for business purposes. The Rock
observed, "Those who talk the
most usually do the least, Oalento
didn't get very far, Moore Is an-

other Galento with less talent for
words."
- Marciano makes no effurt to dis
guise his bitter disappointment at
not being accepted as a popular
champion. This principally is due
to1 incredibly stupid public rela
tions which sees a heavyweight
champion of the world, with every
requisite for acclaim, carefully
screened from newspapermen
while in training and hidden away
between fights. '
Moore, despite his ancientness.
Is the first challenger who has
not had to be built up for Marcl
ano. The old bloke behind the
goatee- is given an excellent
ohance by not a . few, and this
pleases The Rock no end
So Marclano sees Archie Moore
as the medium through which he
can accomplish two things shut
up a character who charged he
was being avoided and gain be
luted recognition.
Chatting with - Rocky Marciano,
you feel as though he would like
In Rnv'
"I'll slick this old guy up Into
the cheaper seats and then maybe
somebody will recognize me on
tile street."
Worry Bug

LOS ANGELES M The worry
bug settled down on the UCLA foot
ball team Wednesday, specifical
ly at the Jinxed right guard posi
tion, and heightened an observa
tion made by an expert following
the Bruin victory over a green
Texas AiiM team.
"UCLA has a good team, a po
tentially fine team. But it does
nave several weak spots which
could be exploited by a good split

The expert must remain urildent.
tiled, by request, but the broad
Inference was that against Mary
land Saturday the Pacific Coast
eleven will be meeting a good split
T machine.
And Texas AIM, as of this early
date, with a host of sophomores
In responsible positions, was not
yet a good spllt-T outfit.
It is no secret that one position,
right guard, may be exploited by
the Terrapins at College Park in
their major engagement with
UCLA.
First Don Shinnick, 235-pound
fullback converted to guard, in
jured a rib against the- Aggies,
and re-injured It In practice Mon
day. Coach Red Sanders installed sec
ond string Tom Thaxter, 187, at the
spot.
Tuesday Thaxter cracked a bone
in his right hand and will miss
action for six weeks.
. Sanders named third st'dng Esk
er Harris. 176, either to start or to
relieve sninnick In the event lie
sees limited action.
