Brave Black Panther Dies
In Attempt To Save Mate
CHICAGO (UP A gallant black
panther, aging but still full of
jungle courage, fought to the death
with five lions to save his mate
at tile Biookfield Zoo.
Visitors watched in horror on
Wednesday as Snowball, a 12-year
old panther from Sumatra, sprang
at five lions who had been let
Into his cage by mistake.
Snowball never had a chance. A
single blow from a huge lion's
paw broke his back and he was
dpid within moments. But his
mate, spitting fury from a ledge
in the cage, was unharmed.
The lions were in the panthers'
cage for only eight minutes before
Mo attendants, using bars, poles,
and streams of water, forced them
irom Snowball's mangled body.

aaid Snowball apparently sprang
into battle to save the life of his
mate and himself.
A fluke of chance led to Snow
ball's death. He and bis mate had
been moved from their regular
cage while ft was being cleaned.
Ten minutes before feeding time,

The panther tensed, his muscles
standing out under his sleek brack
coat. His long tail twitched.
Then in a single, graceful lunge
of split - second fury. Snowball
leaped at the advancing lions.
Snowball went down under two of
the lions. Then the others sprang
on him with vengeful claws. The
panther was probably dead within
seconds, witnesses said.
Snowball was past his prime.
Raised In the Sumatra Jungle, he
was brought to the suburban
Brookficld zoo with his .mate In
1946 at the age of three. Now, at
the moment of his last battle, he
was 12 years old the equivalent
of a 60-year old man.
The lions were young and husky.
Each one weighed about 300
pounds to Snowball's 175. Their
average age was four or five years
equivalent to a 30-year old man
in the prime of life.
Snowball was a beautiful beast,
despite his age. His species is
known as a black leopard, al
though it Is commonly referred to
as a black panther. His body was
practically coal black.
West German Chancellor
Flies To Soviet Meeting
Adenauer fears the Soviets will
effer unity and the release of the
prisoners In exchange for the Bonn
republic's abandonment of rearma
ment and the Western alliance and
agreemg to a "neutral" status such
as thai accepted by Austria.
Government officials said the
chancellor would flatly reject any
such proposals and would tell the
Kremlin leaders there waa no hope
of seducing West Germany out of
her alliance with the free West.
Adenauer met with his cabinet
and with the Bundestag (lower
house) -Foreign Affairs Committee
Wednesday and warned them not'
to expect too much that the
main significance of the trip was
that It waa the lirst direct contact
with Soviet leaders.

and the Cult Coast port of Tampi
co. Residents of a four-square-mile
area of northwest Mexico City be
gan cleaning up their flooded
homes. Waters dumped by more
than 10 inches of rain receded.
Portable pumps helped drain the
houses and health units disinfected
buildings.

he would warn the Soviets bluntly
that "normal" relations are impos
sible on the basis of the status
c,uo and the continued division of
Germany.
His price for diplomatic relations
will be a public statement by the
Soviets accepting the principle of
German reunification and firm
guarantees of a timetable by which
this can be achieved.
In addition, he will warn that
normal relations also are impos
sible as long as some 200.000 Ger
mans, Including about 9.000 prison
ers of war. continue' to be held
in slave labor camps behind the
Iron Curtain.
Another important matter for
Adenauer was Germany's eastern
frontier. For the time being it is
on the Oder-Neisse line, with Ger
man territory east of that annexed
by the Soviet Union and Poland.
Moscow gave strong indication
German unification would not even
be considered now. An editorial in
the Communist newspaper Pravda
strongly indicated this was not con
sidered a major topic of the talks.
