And 11 yesrs ago in Germany he decided that he was going to be a doctor. Hadly. a recent guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Myers. 711 Pacific Terrace, was less than a year away Irom his goal already in 1949 when he was forced to make a difficult deci sion. Then he had to choose between either coming to the United States fl rvi ti.. i 4 j LESLIE HADFY or staying to complete his studies in Got'he University at Frankfort, dermany. .The usDirine medic chose the former when it appeared that he might not get on another immi gration quota for some time if he oidn't go when he had the chance. ' So then he had to start almost from the beginning again en route lo his degree In medicine. Today he once more is within one year of fulfilling his ambition, ana tins lime he hopes he Isn't forced to take another trip. Hadfy has already completed 13 Years of college-level Btudy here pud in Europe. In 1040 he enrolled In the Ludovika Academy In Bud apest, Hungary, his birthplace. It Is equivalent to West Point. ' After three years there he was ent io the Russian front and was later assigned to train young sol diers in Budapest. He letl that clly shortly before It was taken by the Allies and went to Vienna. The Russians soon made it hot there, so he skipped over to Hersh fleld, Germany, where he saw American troons for the first time. After the war he began studies at the Oothe University. j He was in school until 1949 when he decided to come to the United States. . "Germany wasn't my home" he explnined, "and the Kussians oc Cupled Hungary." 1 Ho knew little English upon nr rival. They had ttoiiDCd leaching the language in the Hungarian schools in 1941 in tear mm uie neorile would understand the Brit j.ih radio broadcasts. But he learned fast, and knew many words from songs he had played as a plBnist with a band In Europe. Hadfy worked as a research and leaching assistant In the depart ment of anatomy at the University of Southern California in his first year and a half in this country. During the evenings he worked a the Long Beach Naval Hospital. Then in 1951 he was admitted as a graduate student in bio-ciiemis-tiy at the University oi California. Two years later he earned his master's degree in thnt field. Now he is Hearing the end of a lonK study grind, but lo Hadly It hasn't been a drudgery, "Studying gets easier, not hard er as vou go along." he pointed out. Now he is working for an optical firm. isttt, i trlcHinc Mr. and Mm Myers with Countess Catherine Lorraine, the widow of Arcnauke Albrecht of Hapsburg - Lorraine, Austria, the uncrowned King ol Austria - Hungary. He died last June. The countess was accom panied by her two daughters, princesses Snrolta, 15, and llaiko, i.i They and the Hadfy's were good iricnas DacK in nuiiijaij. Leslie Hadfy is an American cit izen now, and before long lie ex pects to put up a namcplate. I', will read Dr. Hadfy, the culmina tion of many determined years of study. Neighbors Hold Meeting Klamath Falls Royal Neighbors of America were tile hosts on August 26 to a homecoming meet ing held in the KC Hall. The meeting was attended by members from several Royal Neighbor dis tricts of Southern Oregon. Twenty-five year pins w e I e awarded at an open meeting to I he following members: Zena King, Anne Savnge, Alma Sweetman, Ruth Brandenburg. Luctta Blunt Rush, Freda Jackson, Charlotte Carmichael, John Allen, Frank Hogue, Edward Regnicr, Clayton Morris, and Bert Shuey. Members from the Bend camp attending were: Mabel Weaser, district deputy, Alice Douglas, oracle, Katherine Winter, flag bearer, Blanche Durham, chancel lor and Lucy Billadean. May Lo gan, state supervisor, also attend ed. Elsa Walker, district deputy from Medford, was in attendance as was Jessie Steele the Klamath district deputy. The Mldlnnd Grange entertained, aided by the Three Aches and a Pain quartet; the young tumblers. The Three of Us and the history of the Friendship Camp was re lated by Kate Hogue. Slides of Bermuda were shown by Uie C. 0. Larsons. Refreshments were served un der the direction of Donna Oliver, Gertrude Huff and Dacle Hooper.
