Eye Offered
By Chessman
' SAN QUENTIN HP Convict-
autbcr Caryl Chessman litet ally
offered one of his eyes Thursday in
exchange for a lie detector test to
prove his claimed innocence but
the proposal was rejected.
Ed Scotield, a Southern Calilor-
nia public relations man, con-
tacted Chessman's attorney and
said he was acting on behalf of a
blind person in Los Angeles who
Deeded a corneal transplant.
Berwyn Hice, the attorney, said
Chessman offcied to "go over to
the prison hospital tomorrow" and
give one of his eyes "if Scotielrt
and his blind friend will influence"

NINETY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE for Great Northern Railroad were terminated Wednesday
when Robert Olson, 68, left, and Frank Sexton, 65, right, retired. Sexton, who has been with
GN for 45 years, was chief clerk for the Klamath division office and has spent 27 years
here. He began his railroad career as an extra-gang timekeeper In Spokane. Olson, who
has been with GN for 50 years, has been an assistant trainmaster here and began as a call
boy in Larimore, North Dakota. Sexton intends to take a vacation in California, while Olson
said he is going to learn how to cook so that his wife can retire. Congratulating the two men
is R. H. Hemmesh, center, superintendent of GN here.

CLIMBING ABOARD this diesel locomotive for his last trip
Wednesday after 48 years of railroading is Engineer George
E. Cavey. Cavey boarded his first train on August 20, 1907
in Roseburg, and has been riding them ever since. He has
recently been making the Klamath Falls to Portland run for
Southern Pacific. He intends to farm near Cottage Grove
after his retirement.

William Jeffcoat, who has been
serving as assistant manager at
the Klamath Simplot Soilbuilder
unit, has been promoted to the
post of manager of the new Brea
Chemical plant and Simplot Soil
builder unit at Malin.
The Jeffcoata have aold their
home near Klamath Falls and
have rented a residence on the Ai
Macartney property near Malin.
Their son. Jay, will enter the fifth
grade in the Malm school.
Chessman, convicted in 1948 on
17 counts of kidnaping, robbery
and rape, has claimed such a test
would prove he did not commit the
crimes for which he was sentenced
to death.
