TOP RECORDING STARS, Rosie and Retta, will be featured

The two sprightly singers have scored big hits with their rec
ords for Columbia. Th's will be the fourteenth appearance of
'' Maddox Brothers and Rose under the banner of Baldy Evans.
Their average attendance here has exceeded 1,100 persons.
Train Smashes
Car, Four Die

, identified two of the victims as
Alex N. Gamboa, 20, San Jose,
'. and Krmino R." Toriez. 28. Santa
, Clara. The other two victims, a wo
man of about 25, and a young girl
about five years old, were not im
mediately identified.
H. A. Schomson, Sunnyvale, an
eyewitness, estimated the train
was going about SO miles an hour
when it smacked into and disin
tegrated the automobile.
Schomson said the crossing
warning signal was working when
the train approached the Intersec
tion but the driver of the car
apparently didn t see it.

great that, it sent pieces of the
car flying into about 10 other autos
parked nearby.
ITwo Officers
Die At Sea
SAM FRANCISCO (UP) The
captain of "a Navy transport and
ithe Chief Mate of an American
freighter' died within a few min
utes of each other as the trans
port sped tothe stricken mate's
rescue, it was learned Wednesday.
The Military Sea Transport Serv
ice said Capt. Harold S. Sawyer,
62. of the transport Gen. Daniel
Sultan, and Chiet Mate Hans Hjol
man. 57, of the freighter Alamo
Victory, apparently died of heart
attacks.
Sawyer's ship was diverted In
the Pacific Ocean northeast of
Midway Island to rendezvous with
the Alamo Victory and take Hje!
man aboard for medical treat
ment. However, shortly before the two
ships were to meet Monday nieht
Hjclman died. The Sultan was noti
fitd to resume its course and a
lew minutes later Sawyer died.
Sawyer was from Gieenbra?.
Calif., and Hjclman from San
Teandro, Calif.
Yreka Woman's
Death Learned
YREKA Funeral services for
Mrs. Pearl A. North were held
Tuesday afternoon at Girdner's
Funeral chapel in Yreka with In
terment at Evergreen Cemetery.
She died at the home of a cousin.
Mrs. Mamie Wohlfert Moore of
Yreka Thursday evening. She had
made her home with Mrs. Moore
for 14 years, and was employed at
the Electric Supply Company of
Yreka during that period.
Her husband died a number of
years ago.
A native of Michigan, she was
born on May 12, 1887, She was an
active member of the Hope Re
bekah Lodge 33 and the Christian
Science church.
Survivors include an aunt, Mrs.
Alice E. Norton of Yreka, two cou
sins, Mrs. Moore and Ernest G.
Millbourn of Yreka; a niece and
four nephews.
Mrs. Edith Newton of the Christ
ian Science church officiated at
the services, and graveside rites
were performed by Hope Rebekah
Lodge.
