ALICE LAMM Firit womn to be a director of the KUmath
County Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Umm needs no !ntro
duction to Klemfh County. She has been an outstanding figure
in civic and social life sine she came to Klamath Falls in 1914
and accepted a position that year with the Klamath Develop
ment Company. It was during the time she was with the K-D
Company that her ability was recogniied and rewarded with a
chair at the chamber board of directors' table the first given a
woman. Alien the lt was last year's president of Soroptimitt
Club, whern she answers membership roll call with her classifi
cation as "Timber Interests".

AVIS McCONNElL, owner-manager of the Pelican Cafe,
722 Main Street, has been a member of the Klamath County
Chamber of Commerce for nearly 20 years.
She came here from Seattle where she was attending the
University of Washington, while she was working for her
masters. She had prepared herself for a teaching career, and
already had her certificate when she came to work for CaU
tfornia Oregon Power Company instead in 1924.
Her first business venture into the culinary realm was a ta
room at 560 Congerthe home of Mrs. Twyla Ferguson, where
Mrs, McConnell also lived. And later, another tea room more
centrally located at fifth and Pine Streets in the Addta Walker
house, a local landmark, rated several years ago to provide
parking space for LePointe's customers.
Customers from all over the world have been greeted by
Mrs. McConnetl at the Pelican Cafe for 22 ye art. Her estab
lishment is widely known for good food lerved in a setting of
: art treasures rare oriental rugs, rich Chinese (Win, an unusual
collection of silver serving dishes and Chinese obfefs d' art cot
fected by the feminine restaurateur throughout the years.

Kitchen operation is supervised by Lucille Warner, assistant

"ALICE THE 2nd" in our "ladies of the chamber" is Alice
Vitus, presently director in charge of civic affairs for the
Klamath County Chamber of Commerce board. She has been
J, member since 1934. Mrs, Vitus owns and manages the Guidn
Printing Company. She also owns the building which houses the
fully equipped commercial; printing plant, at I20S Klamath
Avenue. ,
She came here in 1931 from the University of Oregon as
a member of the Herald and News advertising staff.
Mrs. Vitus started her own business the Klamath Shopping
Guide in 1933. She changed the business name to Guide
Printing Company in 1950, when she discontinued the paper.
Alice the 2nd also finds time for civic work. For three
consecutive years she was county chairman for the Klamath
County Polio Drive; she was a board member of the United
Fund; and is an active member of Quota Club, of which she
was charter president and district governor.

VERA RUTQUIST who is the "baby" member in the
women-owner chamber members is the Vera of Vera's Own

She is a comparative newcomer to Klamath Falls, coming
here about three years ego but she is an old hand in the
candy manufacturing, business, and has never wanted to bt? any

Mrs. Ferrens came to Klamath Falls about 12 years ago
from Portland. She is also a "1st" the first woman to be sec
retary of the Public Utilities Commission of Oregon a post she
held in the 1930 s. . ',
As it usual with busy business women she finds time for
volunteer work on the -registration desk with the flloodmobile:
