Mosquitoes In Klamath
Area Pesky But Not The
Disease Carrying Types
By JOE RltiKKT
Of all tiie millions oi .bugs and
insects inhabiting the earth, the
common, everyday mosquito is
probably the moat reviled, detest
ed, hated, etc. ...
Klamath Falls residents have
been attesting to this fact oil sum
mer Ions.
Little opposition could be found
to a statement by the Encyclopedia
Americana. It says:
". . . they are intolerable pests."
The encyclopedia also says that
Uiey are cosmopolitan.
Local citizens have ether names
for them.
No one has ever been able to
determine how much blood is lost
to the insects over a summer's
period, but it probably would solve
the problems of the Red Cross for
many summers.
And yet the book of knowledge
reveals that:
'. . . the taste for blood is
certainly an acquired one and a
relatively unimportant factor in
the lives of the majority of mos
quitoes.' In other words, they don't even
need it.
The mosquito menace has not
been ignored. The city council
members were bitten like everyone
else, so they decided a survey was
in order.
This was accomplished last week
by a man from the state board
of health, with the assistance of
two U.S. Public Health officials.
They gave a report on what they
found to Bob Bonney, head of the
city recreation department. He has
been one of the more harried men
in town. Trying to keep the bug
population down around the city's
recreation areas has not been a
picnic.
Chiloquin To
Remodel Hall
CHIXOQUIN The city hall,
which houses the police department,
Jail, fire station, library and city
council quarters is being remodeled.
The major change is the enlarg
ing of the Jail facilities. The extra
apace is being made available by
moving the fire fighting equipment
and fire truck to the city ware
house, purchased last year from
Copeland Yards and which adjoins
the city hall.
A flag pole has been Installed,
new walks and steps being made,
and the outside of the south end
of the building covered with con
crete. The windows on the north
ode are being redesigned for se
curity purposes.

Swap Atom Secrets
GENEVA IB Russian and
American atomic scientists say
they have exchanged informal in
vitations to visit each other's coun
tries. They said Friday night the invi
tations were extended at social
gatherings during the current Ge
neva conference on peaceful uses
of the atom, but that no definite
visits were set.
Prof. A. P. Vinogradov, a mem
ber of Soviet Russia's Academy of
Sciences and a delegate to the con
ference here, told reporters:
"I have personally received a
number of Invitations to visit other
countries, including one from Dr.
Lawrence of California and from
a number of others. On our part
we have made similar lnvita
tlons."

said these two species are the
most troublesome.
They are the kind that swarm
up and try to eat you up, and then
carry you off," he quipped.
The experts found five m.,nr
breeding areas tor these iwo tvnes
Tney were the log ponds near Pel
ican city, irrigated pastures near
Moore Park, marsh areas around
Lake Ewauna. sluggish drainage
ditches in the South Suburbs, and
seepage along the main canal.
Braden pointed out that a control
program would not necessarily
have to be expensive, but would
take a lot of time.
It can't be nr,Dharri It has
to be scientific, and you first must
know what you have to fight," he
said.
It was suggested that the most
desirable method of solving the
problem would be to get rid of
the breeding areas by draining the
wltr or by filling in the trouble
spots. A less satisfactory wv
would be to celan out the vegetation.
Another method of control is to
spray the breeding location with
Insecticide to kill the mosquitoes
in the larva stage.
"Fighting the adult mosouito Is
only a stop-gap procedure." said
Braden. "By that time they are
widly scattered and hard to deal
with."
Spraying for the babv buss ef
fectively would mean covering an
area from three to five miles from
the city. That is how far the mos
oultocs travel ucder normal conditions.
The health officials did not find
cause for concern ovur the disease
carrying potentialities of the iccal
mosquitoes. Tne Cules-type insect
carries encephalitis or sleeping
sickness. This disease is catried
from horses by the mosouito to
humans.
However only two cases were
reported of horses in this area
last year, and none so far this
year. This is due in part to the
fact that most local people vac
cinate their animal? to prevent it.
ine Klamath rails citizenry can
be thankful for that, because the
disease is almost incurable in hu
mans.
Malaria Is another of the di

but some have been reported in
Medford and Roseburg.
But even if danger of disease
from the pests here is at a mini
mum, they still can be decidedly
unpleasant.
