LUNCH-BOXERS CAN MAKE and pack their own meals if it's
vegetable-beef soup, milk, cheese sandwiches, fruit and
cookies. The lunch kit, wide-mouthed vacuum bottle and cover

School lunches fall Into three
ca'.esories not recognized by any
home economist in the country:
the dash home and gulp; dash to
the cafeteria and gulp; and the

Wise mothers-are-concerned with
making meals balanced, nutritious
and attractive to the school child.
If the gulp-at-home plan Is In
force, the problem Is simply one of
variety.

The problems of variety that har

very real. No child will eat peanut

Does your young son claim the

Does your 15-year-old daughter
argue that wearing glasses might
ruin her chances of being popular?
Don't let these shortsighted argu

child's progress in school may be
hampered by an unsuspected vis

That's why you should have your
teen-agers' eyes checked as part
of the regular back-to-school check
tip. If glasses are recommended,
help them select frames which are
attractive and youthful. Your optic

One steady favorite of the eai-at-home

frequently the one food mother can

Many mothers of older kids work
outside the home and rely on their
kids to fix their own lunch at home.
For families in this category, sim

stored in the refrigerator the night
before. Many canned foods can be
placed on the counter to be opened
and heated by the youngsters.
In finding foods that are appeal

help. As any mother knows, young
people will combine an unlikely

Help for mothers who consign

can onlv be extended through a
visit to the school. If the foods

probably get a decent lunch. If

better solution.

Your. Library Gives You
Volumes Of Real Service
V.1ut do you know about your
public library?
The serage American library
does a lot more than lend books.
The day of the musty bookroom
with its prim mlMress of the
shelves is lading into lV:e pa.si.
Today's library is coming into Its
own after generations of service as
"that old marble mausoleum."
Alert librarians today look on
their collections as centers of com
munity information. They are
reaching out into their commu
nities to establish a real appreci
ation for literature' and learning.
Here are some of the ways the
library is serving.
When young Johnny begins his
school career, the library starts its
job. Wherever facilities' permit, en
tire classes are urged to come in
groups to the library. There they
are introduced to the world of
books.
Many larger libraries start with
preschool children. They conduct
programs with picture books for
the tots, while their mothers In
vestigate volumes on child care
and housekeeping.
And the library sticks with Its
young readers from infancy right
into their adult life. They are
graduated from picture books to
the "story iiuur" to the teen-age
shelves.
But the library doesn't forget
special problems. Its service to
sickbeds includes visits to hospital
wards and mailings to shut-Ins In
many locales. For the seriously
bedridden, new machines project
the pages of books on ceilings.

Watch Gifts Good Anytime
Example of faulty timing: Giving
Junior his first good watch on the
day of his graduation.
If you reBlly want to be thought
ful, you will give him the present
now, at the time when he actually
needs it.
Today's average high school or
college Is forced to run on a sched
ule as tight as that of a radio
station. Time has become as im
portant as erasers, blackboards
and pencils. And if Junior is late
to class he is almost sure to be
penalized.
The watch he wears to, school
does not have to be expensive, but
it does have to be dependable. 8tyl
ing, of course, is a matter of
taste. "But be sure that the model
you choose is shock-resistant and
waterproof, with a new "unbreak
able'' mainspring.
For a child who Is still in gram
mar school, glamorous cases and
fragile bands nro usually best
avoided. Look Instead for strength.
Hands should be large and sturdy,
numerals clear and Aharp. .
Another excellent gilt, for stu
dents who live at college, is a
small, modern alarm clock. Many
attractive new models have lumi
nous hands and hour dots and dur
able plastic cases. But before you
Iinally buy, oe sure to test tha

it s perfect. If It's short and purry,
forget It.
NOTE FOR PARENTS
Children and toddlers don't for
get on purpose. Tney Just get
interested in something else in the
very new and wide world. For this
reason, the surest way to convey a
message to the teacher Is to pin
it on the child.
ACADEMIC PAPER ROUTE
A paper route Is pretty tradition
al. Now many high school and
college students are the nearby
paper's "representatives." They
deliver the paper within the safe
confines of a school building.
