THIRTY MILLION DOLLAR SOUTHERN OREGON DEVELOPMENT These two pictures il
lustrate iketchily what happens when modern technology and hitherto undeveloped raw ma
terial resources come together. The upper picture shows the smelter building at the Hanna
Nickel Smelting Company's operation at Riddle, in Douglas County, Shown below is the
hogged fuel conveyor that feeds furnaces where the ore is dried. Also visible are ore stack
ing equipment, a pile of pre in the stockpile grounds and, at left, an end view of the ore re
claiming tunnel. The ore comes from Nickel Mountain, a mass of low-grade nickel ore at the
edge of the town of Riddle. New processes have made its development possible. A total of
some 30 million dollars is being spent in the project. A new development of similar magni
tude for the Klamath Basin is possible through utilization of jackpine, formerly regarded as
useless, but flow recognized as one of the most valuable pulp woods in the West.

Bond Maun' for the promotion of
U.S. Savings Bonds buying among
its members. This was announced
today by Mr. J. C. Cecil, of Burns,
president of the OCA, through Its
headquarters tiere.
In a message mailed to the as
sociation members, President Ce
cil explains the reasons for Cattle
men's Bond Month.
"That the cattle raiser needs
ready-cash reserves to protect him
against the many risks of his busi
ness needs no arguing, nor does
the fact that U.S. Savings Bonds
offer a completely safe and sure
way to build up these reserves.
Furthermore, the sale of these
bonds to Americans in every walk
of life Is essential to the success of
the national effort to keep the dol
lar stable in buying power in the
face of inflationary or deflationary
pressures. Then, in turn, helps to
build up strength in our economy
essential to an effective military
defense program to protect our
freedom and discourage aggressors
against plunging the world Into war.
"The survival of our American
system of individual enterprise will
depend in the end on how well we
make It work." he continued. "The
struggle is for the minds of men,
and blowing people to bits with
super bombs will not solve the
problem: it can only create chaos
and ruin. We have to be prepared
to defend ourselves so effectively
thai aggressors w-ill realize lha;
starting another world war would
be suicidal. But the basic problem
is to convince the peoples of the
world that the way of freedom Is
the better wr.y to a richer and ful
ler life.
"If world war Is avoided, the
next few years can see an advance
in our productive power through
the use of atomic energy that could
dwarf the results of the invention
of the steam engine. If there ever
was a time when we could ill af
ford an economic setback,1 this Is
it, for we never had as much to
gain or as much to lose. Americans
should be supporting every move
in the direction of economic sta
bility, and the Savings Bonds pro
gram is certainly one that deserves
our support."
"Mr. Cecil added that individual
Americans now own over 37 billion
dollars, present cash value, in Se
ries E Savings Bonds and over a
billion dollars in the new current
income Series H Bond, which re
sembles the E Bond In term and
yield but pays interest tay Treas
ury check twice a year instead ot
adding the Interest to the cash
value.
"Sales of these bonds this year
are the largest since wartime
1945." he concluded, "and redemp
tions are down. Also 75 per cent of
the dollar value of the E Bonds
that have matured, beginning In
