Supervised Army Monument
A former Klamath Falls resi
dent, who has helped make history
In Korea, promoted the Idea of a
memorial to the gallant 406 U.S,
soldiers of the 24th Infantry divi
sion who first slowed tho advance
of 20.000 Communists at the be
ginning of the Korean War.

wile Elizabeth, his three children,
Sarah, 11, George, 8, Ma r y Su
san, 4 years and his mother,
Mrs. May Taylor live here, pro
posed monument be placed on the
site of that battle. On October 17 he
helped dedicate the shaft on a hill-

To Aid Board
SALEM Wl The Oregon State
Board ot Control decided Monday
to set up a seven-member advisory
committee to help the board choose
the site for the new 114,000,000
mental hospital to be built In the
Portland area.
The committee will set up a
point system to aid in evaluating
the various sites that will be 1
considered.
The committee will include
representatives of the Oregon State
Hospital, University of Oregon
Medical School, Oregon Mental
Health Assn., Oregon Neuropsychi
atrlo Society, State Civil Defense
Organization, Oregon State Medical
Society and the State Board of
Health.
The people voted at November's
general election to build the
hospital, which will be located
within 20 miles of the Multnomah
County courthouse. The board of
Control will aslc the Legislature,
which meet here next month, to
appropriate almost $7,000,000 to
begin construction.
The board tentatively agreed
with Glenn Stanton, Portland archi
tect, that the hospital shouldn't be
built on the site of the University
Medical School In Portland. Stanton
said there isn't enough space, and
that the hospital should be located
a safe distance from Portland if
the city suffers an atomic attack.
Stanton said a 400-acre site Is
needed, and that he believes a site
could be "bought for around $200,000.
Gov, Paul L. Patterson, chairman
of the board, said he doesn't
expect opposition to any proposed
sites. Such opposition delayed the
picking of the site for the new state
reformatory, to be built three miles
south of St. Paul In northern
Marion County,
Missing Man's
Body Found
PORTLAND Ml The body of
John J. Tomlinson, 86, missing
from the home of his daughter
since Oct. 2, was found by sheriff's
deputies Sunday,
It was badly decomposed and
parts of it bad been carried away
by animals,
Tomlinson was believed to have
become lost in the woods some
two miles from his daughter's
home and to have died from
exhaustion and exposure.
Identification was made by two
sons, 1. J, Tomlinson and Emery
Tomlinson, both of Seattle.

The masonry column which adds
about 12 feet to the height of the
monument is of native stone.
Taylor conceived the Ideal for the
memorial in March and pushed
the construction to completion.
As historian for the division,
Taylor did not see action In Korea,
but he was wearing the 24th's tara
leaf shoulder patch at Pearl Har-
bor when the attack there
embroiled this country in World
War If. Because of his perform
ance during that engagement, he
was returned to the U.B. for train
ing as an officer. Later, in Italy,
he received two Silver Stars, the
army's third highest decoration,
two Bronze Stars, and four Purple
Hearts.
Taylor who Is stationed In Ja
pan, attended grade school at Riv
erside. Fremont school and gradu
ated from Klamath Union High
School In 1936. He attended Wil
lamette University before enlisting1
in 1940. He is 36 years old.
Mrs. Taylor, who makes her
home at 42 Pine Street with her
father, George Burton, will join
her husband In Japan in the near
future. She spent some time with
him in Germany at the close of
World War II. Their, youngest child
Mary Susan was born there.
Taylor's father, George Taylor,
resides In Portland.

cedure and rules, although the
league has no legal connection

course, but the procedure Is about
