Klamath Unit
Plans are being formulated to'
enlist another squad of men from
the Klamath Basin in January, M
Sgt. Charles A. West, one of the
local Marine Corps recruiters, an
nounced today.
The new group, similar to ' the
Pelican Leathernecks who were en
listed in June of this year, will be
i called the Klamath Basin Marines.
It is planned they will leave
Klamath Falls January 23 and re
main as a unit while undergoing
recruit training. Reason lor enlist
ing units such as the Pelican
Leathernecks and the Klamath Ba
sin Marines is to instill greater
pride in the Individual and the
Marine Corps, inasmuch as re
cruits will be with buddies from
their home town, Marine officials
say.
Letters will be mailed soon to
' men whose names are on file in
the Marine Corps Recruiting Of
fice as initial members of the new
unit, informing them of the date
of departure. Others are welcome
to inquire about chances of enlist
ing with the unit.
A banquet will' be held the lat
ter part of January at which
swearing In ceremonies will take
place, This is the first time, ac
, cording to the Marine recruiters,
that a sweating in ceremony has
been planned by any branch of the
service in Klamath Falls.
The officials also stated that in
the future, recruits will be flown
to Portland for their physical.
Tours of duty with the Marine
Corps are three and four years.

a tonsilectomy.
It was announced that subordi

house contest for 1954, Winners will
be announced at the next meeting.
