Irving Scales, whom th FBI said
hn.s been running the Communist
parly's activities In Tennessee and
the Carollnas for more than three
years, was arrested here last night.
Federal agents arrested the 34-
yenr-old Scales on a warrant sworn
out at Wtlkesboro, N C, under the
Smith Act. This act outlaws any
conspiracy to teach and advocate
the violent overthrow of the U.S.
government.
J. Edgar Hoover, FBI director.
said Scales, also known as Joe
Shields, has been active In the
party in North and South Carolina
since 1946.
Scales did not mitt when he
was arrested on a residential street
corner. The FBI here declined fur
ther comment.
Hoover said the long hunt for
Scales began when he disappeared
from his home at Carrboro, N.C.,
Oct. 6. 1951. If convicted. Scales
could be Jailed for 10 years, fined
$10,000 or both.'
At a hearing before a U.S. com
missioner, bond was set at $100,000
over Scales' protest.
Scales Is a grandson of a former

with the Ground Observer Corps of
America to do their part to safe
guard this "land of the tree" from
attack by dictatorial nations."
Wirth was born June 19, 1901,
and is the second of seven chil
dren born to Anna and John Wirth
of Dux, Bohemia. Two brothers,
Vernon and Henry were also born
at Dux. In 1905, the Wirths came
to American with their three boys
ana settled at Trinidad, Colorado.
The last four children of the Wirthsrl
were American born.
When Wirth was 41-years of
age, he came to Modoc Point to 1
work in the mill there. He moved
to Klamath Falls in 1945. He is a
veteran of World War I, serving in
the Naval Air Force with the rat- '
ing of 2C-CM.
Wirth wears artificial limbs as
the result of a railroad accident
that severed his left lee just below
(the knee ana the right one just
above. With the aid of a cane he
climbs stairs and gets around
wherever he chooses.
