cratic trend last night by becom
ing the first Republican governor
ever reelected in Maryland.
The 53-year-old Baltimorean o
feated Democrat H. C. Byrd, for
mer university of Maryland presi
dent, in an election which saw the
Democrats:
1. Regain a 4-3 majority of the
seven-man House of Representa
tives delegation, where the Repub
licans had won the same edge in the

2. Elect Democrat C. Ferdinand
Sybert, former speaker of the
House. of Delegates, attorney gen.
eral over the Republican lncunv
bnt, Edward D. E . Rollins.
3. Strengthen their control of the
state Legislature.

Roll call'was answered by naming
some ingredient that is used in a
fruit cake.
Reports were heard front mem
ber attending the Cascade Dis
trict meeting held in Bend earlier
in the month. Horticulture and 4-H
Club scholarships and Christmas
shows were the high lights of the
program, Jane Brader gave a talk
on Conservation as practiced at
Prlngle Falls Experiment Station.

excellent material on bulbsand

congressional district, giving the
Republicans their only Texas vic
tory In the general election.
Bruce Alger s victory over Dem
ocrat Wallace Savage of Dallas
was an upset and even Alger ad
mitted he was surprised he had
saved the Republicans from a
shutout.
Alger had a margin of 3,111
votes over Savage, with a total of
27,683 votes to 24,573 in the linal
count of the night.
Gov. Allan Shivers walloped his
Republican opponent, Tod Adams
of Crockett, with a total of 286,811
votes to, 32,597.
U, S. Sen. Lyndon Johnson won
just as easily, with 266,360 vote
to 47,094 lor the Republicans' Car
los Watson of Brownsville and 1,
772 for Fred Spangler of the Con
stitutional party.

lead over Republican Tom Nolan
that the Election Bureau, an agen
cy sponsored by Texas newspapers
and radio stations, didn't bother to
count the votes.
