Mine Claim Hearings To Be Held
MED FORD Protest hearings
on 88 unpatented mining claims,
covering 14,080 acres in the Union
Creek area of the Rogue River
National Forest, are scheduled to
be held November 3-6, at the Jack
son County Courthouse at Medford.
Announcement was made by For
est Supervisor J. H. Wood.
Claimants requesting the hear
ing and scheduled to appear in
clude U. JB. Mining Exploration
Company, known as Kower and
Young group, and J. M. Vassbind
er. Bureau of Land Management
representatives will conduct ihe
hearing.

service revolver. Police said the

Protest hearings Involving I.UO
acres of mining claims near Un
ion Creek were held in May of
1053. A decision by Bureau of Land
Management officials following
those hearings rendered the claims
invalid.
Under existing mining laws, un.
patented mining claims on nation-
al forest land may be contested
for cause by the federal govern.
ment. Claimants are notified offi
cially of contest and allowed 30
days to request a prolest hearing
The hearing provides opportunities
for claimants, to disprove contest
charges. Failure to request hear
ings or failure to appear at near
tngs constitutes admission of con
test charges and claims become
subject to invalidation.
In addition to claims to be
heard next week, 247 other claims,
involving 39.520 acres near Union
Creek also have been contested.
Claimants P. L. Yarbrough and
J. F. McKee failed to request
hearings on claims covering 34.-
770 acres of that group. The re-
