New SP Lunch Car In Use
Southern Pacific is glorifying the
hamburger by dedicating to it the
newest cafeteria-style lunch car on
any American railroad, president
D. J. Russell announces.
The car, "Hamburger Grill," has
lust been placed In service on the
streamlined San Francisco Over
land between San Francisco Bay
area cities and Ogden.
Extra large hamburgers are the
feature item and the railroad
hopes to make them Q3 famous as
its already nationally-known salad
bowl and casserole, the rail pres
ident said. The car will provide
passengers with food Items at any
time of the day, without need to
buy a full meal in tho dining car,
he explained.
"The hamburgers contain U.S.
Choice beef, one of the finest meat
products of Southern Pacific terrl
tory," according to J. H. Grid
ley, manager of the railroad'i
dining car department. Also fea
tured, he said, will be such items
as salad, soup, chili con came,
sandwiches, milk shakes, etc.
Rebuilt in the railroad's Sacra
mento shops from a conventional
dining car, the new Hamberger
Grill includes a combination kitchen-pantry
where food items are
prepared, a glassed - in display
ccunter where passengers may
make their selections and a table
area seating 32 persons.

Edward P. Howrey of the Federal
Trade Commission has ordered a
"sneedv but thorough" probe of
business mergers to determine
whether competition is being lessened.
Cituii a nearly fourfold increase
in mergers and company sales
that .took place following the out
break of war in Korea, Howrey
bracketed it with the "trust form
ing era of 1887-1901" and "a sig
nificant merger movement in the
1920s."
"There is no question that the
present merger movement must
be carefully assessed," in the light
of the antitrust laws, Howrey said
late Monday in announcing the
new study.
After two decades when mergers
averaged 200 a year, they shot up
in 1951 to 730, rose again in 19o2 to
823 and fell back a little in 1953 to
793, according to a tabulation ac
companying the FTC announc
ment. Business conolidations in
1951, 1952 and 1953 totaled 2,319,
compared with 602 for the prevl
ous three years. The all-time high
recorded by FTC was 1,216 mer
gers or business acquisitions in
the manufacturing and mining
field in 1929.
The numerical record alone,
FTC said, does not tell the story it
said it wants to get at, because it
does not differentiate between bil-lion-doUar
and small-p o t a t o e s
combines, and does not throw light
on the economic significance of the
mergers the extent to which they
jmay have decreased or deformed
competition.
