Army Changes ROTC Policy

announced Monday the establish
ment of a schools division of the
Reserve Officers Training Crops
with .membership . (United-, to . 8
Junior colleges .and 34 military , in
timites. The new system will go Into
effect in the 1955-50 school year.
By then,' the Army, working with
the schools, expects to have a mil
itary program specifically de
signed to fit the needs of military
preparatory schools and ,junior
colleges. ,-:"
Monday'a announcement -'marked
a partial reversal of an Army de
cision last year which would have
limited military training leading
to a commission to men in four
year, senior colleges. The revised
program, inspired in part by
strong criticism of that decision
from military academies, entitles
a, man to a reserve commission
If he completes six years' train
ing In preparatory school and
Junior college, then goes on to
get a college degree.
Another requirement for' a com
mission under the new system Is
1tha the man - attend summer
camp between his Junior and sen
ior college terms.
In order to retain eligibility for
membership in the military
schools division, each institution
must maintain a minimum enroll
ment of 100 students.

Missouri Prison Riot Suppressed

Bureau says Nevada was the na
tion's fastest-growing state during
the last four years while West Vir
ginia showed the greatest popula
tion decline.
The bureau'a annual estimate of
population growth by states
showed last night that all but 3 of
the 48 states had civilian popula
tion gains from April 1, 1950, to
July 1, 1954. . .
West Virginia's 'oooulatlot

period while Nevada showed a 33.1
per cent gain. Other states with
shrinking populations were Arkan
sas and New Hampshire. Gains of
more than 30 per cent were regis
tered for Arizona and Florida.
The bureau estimated the na
tion's civilian population which
excludes members of the armpd
forces totaled 159,084.000 last
July 1. This was an increase of
6.3 per cent from the 149,634,000
counted in the last full, census
April 1, 1950. ,

None of the convicts injured Sat
urday was reported in serious con
dition. - Nine were wounded by guards.
The others, suffering bruises and
lacerations, were believed injured
in fights between Negro" and white
prisoners. The Negro prisoners
were just being marched into the
dining hall when white convicts
started their food demonstration.
