Fire Destroys
Courthouse
CONDON Iffl Gilliam County's
51 - year - old courthouse was
destroyed fire Monday.
The building was evacuated
quickly, and no one was Injured.
Flames apparently starting at
the top of the two-story structure
quickly consumed the roof. Many
of this community's 1,100 residents
joined the volunteer fire depart
ment in efforts to salvage county
record-s and documents.
Firemen were hampered by a
strong west wind that fanned the
flames.
The historic building also houses
the county jail.
The building is in the center of
block, and for a time It was
feared the flames might spread to
other buildings. As a precaution,
streets were barricaded for two
blocks.
First report of the lire was made
by a county worker, Mrs. Lavena
Palmer, who saw smoke drifting
from a cupola. Fifteen minutes
later, the roof collapsed.
Cause of the fire was not deter
mined immediately.
