Films Guide
Decorators
We learn by observation, Today,
when homemakers across the
country are keenly interested in
the interiors of their homes, they
can learn-much from films on in
terior decoration prepared espe
cially to help them create attrac
tive homes.
The National Retail Furniture
Association has produced several
of these films dealing in all phases
of room decoration.
One of these films shows prac
tical methods of color planning.
Color schemes are worked out for
three different types of rooms.
This film is not a lecture on color
theory story with color wheels,
but actual case studies in the
achievement of desired color ef
fects. The film is called Building
Color Schemes.
. Another film. Plan for Better
Living, deals with the planning of
interiors to suit the functional re
quirement of the . occupants of a
home. Presented are the storie3
of three typical families of differ
ent sizes and how they decorate
and furnish their home.
The story of Furniture Style Is
a film, which not only points out
the distinguishing characteristics
of traditional peiod styles, but por
trays the appropriateness of each
to its use and setting. This film
demonstrates the harmonious mix
jnp of styles, including the com
bining of Traditional and Modern.

Home Combines
Old With New
One of the most noticeable
trends in today's furniture is the
meeting of the minds, or to be
specific ft meeting ot the periods.
The smartly decorated home is
the home that combines something
old and something new a touch
of traditional mixed with a touch
of modern.
You will notice that very often
Is is difficult to determine whether
an item of furniture is true mod
ern or true traditional. That is
because the homemaker desires it
that way.
In every home, old or new, there
are items of furniture that create
memories. These are items that
sou do not. under any circum
stances, want to part with. The
secret is to have these particular

Manufacturer Must Build
From Designers Creations
After the furniture designer has
created a beautiful item of furn
iture on the drawing board it is up
to the manufacturer to interpret
this design correctly and practic
ally. . ,
One of- the most Important fea
tures of the completed piece of
furniture is the finish.
Recently manufacturers have
given this process great attention.
It is the' finish that preserves the
furniture, and enhances the pro
duct. ,
Most popular today is the lighter
finish that permits the wood grain
ing to show through. Wood is a
beautiful work of nature. Why
hide it with a dark finish?
Tie trend to the more contem
porary home, whether it be tradi
tional or strictly modern, has
helped to develop this liking lor
the lighter finish.
Many woods, which we have be
come accustomed to seeing only
in a dark finish, are suddenly ap
pearing in beautiful warm, mel
low, more natural colors.
Teak wood, which in lis darken
form is an age old prop for the
cloisone vase is taking a new
place as an interesting table top.
The graining of . teak wood
beautiful, but for centuries it has
been hidden under a dark, almost
black finish. Teak is naturally al
most the color of walnut, but it
has a definite textured graining
When teak is combined with s
woodVof finer graining, it creates
an unusual and contrasting pattern.
,With color playing such an Im
portant pari, in luriuiuie xiiusiies,
manufacturers have devised a way
to preserve this vivid coloring.
You will find on the market group
ings of furniture that have been
plastic coated to preserve the
finish. The finish is so hard that
it is almost impervious.

Hallway Plans
Suggested
Your entrance hallway gives
vour cuest a foot in your door and
an insight Into your home. How
does It look? Does it create a
charming entrance, or is it the for
gotten room in your home? It
shouldn t be.
You can use your entrance hall
to great advantage. Plan It to be
striking, friendly, and to say "wel
come. ' No matter r..w narrow
your hallway, or how small, it can
serve a usetul purpose.
Most nractical suggestion is to
use a handsome commode or wall
console table. Place a mirror over
this item of furniture. It will give
vou and vour guest a quick glimpse
of the tilt-of the hat. By using a
commode you provide extra stor
age space. .
If you use 'a console or fllp4op
table in your hallway you will al
ways have an extra table for serv
ing buffet suppers.
Don't underestimate the value of
a grouping of two small scaled
chairs and lamp table in your en
trance hall. Attractive occasional
chairs, (select ones with a definite
fashion flair), combined with a
unique table, that will be ft conver
sntion piece, gives you sophistica
ted smartness and utility in your
entrance hall. Don't, however, clut
ter your entrance hall. It makes it
difficult for guests to enter.
