Crop Control
End Urged
TWIN FALLS. Idaho Ul Sec
retary of Agriculture Benson said
Thursday he hoped that crop con
trols can be ended ultimately un
der flexible price supports.
Speaking In Idaho's richest farm
county, he criticized rigid, high
supports, saying: "It's Just as
wasteful to spend billions on out
dated farm programs as on out
dated planes, ships and guns."
Hie secretary's remarks were
prepared for a rally in which Ida
ho's Republican leaders fired the
opening gun in their 1954 election
campaign.
"If we want to keep America
strong," Benson declared, "we
cannot afford the luxury of pro
grams that weaken the self-reliance
and the gumption of pro
ducers." Saying he wanted to "make iny
position clear," Benson declared
"I am for aid to agriculture. I
am for price support, I am for a
fair share of the national income
for agriculture." ,
"I am unalterably opposed to
programs that substitute govern
ment aid for reasonable self
help," he said. "And that is the
biggest danger we faced had we
decided to continue the present
system of price supports and
thereby committed ourselves to
building up even more of the un
manageable surplus stocks for
which there were no outlets."
Benson said he hoped flexible
supports eventually would do away
with the need for all acreage con
trols. But controls are still neces
sary in sonu areas, he said, be
cause of "years of wartime In
centives In peacetime" and sur
pluses "acquired under high rigid
supports."

"I can make more money in

She discussed a report that Ital

Eleanora Rossi-Drago were being
considered for a movie here with
Rosalind Russell.
"I doubt if they will come,1
Milly .remarked. "In Italy, they
are stars. Why should they come
here to play in a picture where
Rosalind Russell is the star?
"Take Gina LolTobrigida, for ex

Why did she come here for the

Although she Is not overwhelmed
