"Most of the youngsters in the

"by Joe Hicks, operator of Hicks
Grocery Service, 355 East Main,
wnen asked about acceptance of
World Toy House toys in the area.
Added to this grocery service,
he brought another first to Klam
ath a few months ago when he es
tablished the first distributorship
on the West Coast for World Toy
House toys. Of the more than 100
varieties of toys he keeps on hand
at the local warehouse, he says
water pistols and cap pistols in
cowboy holsters are by all odds
the most popular with the young
fry.
After setting up Toy House racks
in retail outlets all over Oregon,
he entered into a California part
nership at Sacramento with Henry
Bonifield, former foods salesman
in this area who had moved to
Los Angeles. From the two loca
tions they service more than 1100
retail outlets, using 21 trucks in
California and 14 in Oregon.
Each toy has been subjected to
. at least six different week-long
tests in actual use by children,
supervised by the St. Paul head
quarters of World Toy House.
Hicks has just returned from a
' first hand view of the operation
in Minnesota. World Toy House
approves only the toys that meet
rigid requirements for sustained
play value, safety, durability and
suitability.
Manufacturers usually package
the toys before shipment and 90
per cent are now enclosed in Po
lyethelyne, he says.
Two more Pacific Coast distil-
' butorships have been set up, both
in the state of Washington, bring
ing the total of World Toy House
distributors to 68 In the nation.
The packaged toys, displayed on
serve-yourself racks which are re
plenished several times a month,
provide sanitary toys, ranging
from a dime- upwards, all year
round at grocery markets, variety
stores, hotel lobbies and drug
stores. All toys are marked for
suitable age groups.
Although Klamath Falls is head
quarters for the state, the city of
Eugene carries more toy racks per
capita than any other spot in
Oregon.
Mexico Starts
Anti-Drink Move
.MEXICO CITY (JP) A 'small
scale prohibition has invaded Mex
ico, of all places.
The average Mexican is about
the most ardent defender of indi
vidual rights in the world. They
don't even lock up lunatics here,
on the theory a man has a right
to be peacefully crazy. That makes
the advent of prohibition all the
more amazing.
Gov. Agustin Yanez of Jalisco
state, which produces the best te
quila, started it by closing saloons
over the weekend. Police authori
ties were dubious at first. Now they
are mildly enthusiastic and report
petty crime is down 40 per cent.
Neighboring Nayarit state on the
Facific coast was impressed and
put in a similar closing order Aug.
15. Nayarit bar owners threatened
to go on strike. Gov. Limon Guz
man said that would be fine with
him. The saloonkeepers also said
that anybody who wanted a drinit
would just buy a bottle Friday and,
anyway, prohibition would only
lead to speak-easies. Gov. Guzman
said that at least the country peo
ple who sell tn the Saturday mar
kets wouldn't be able to spend
money in the bars.

Spud Meeting
Postponed
A meeting of the Oregon - Cal
ifornia potato committee which
had been tentatively scheduled for
September 9. at Klamath Falls
has been postponed. The commit
tee was to have considered the
recommendation of a 2-inch mini
mum size regulation. The commit
tee now plans a meeting later in
September at which time size reg
ulations will be considered.
In the meantime the committee
announced it had voted to send
Louie Lyon to the National Potato
Council meeting to be held at the
Morrison Hotel in Chicago on Sep
tember 14-15. Lyon is a potato
grower from the Malin district and
a' director of the National Potato
Council.
In announcing the Chicago meet
ing, W. M. Case, executive direct
or of the national council, told po
tato men that the council hopes to
expand an industry - wide, coordi
nated, marketing program. He
pointed out that the 345 million
bushel potato crop forecast for 1954
is not nearly as large as last years
crop but is well above the 339
million bushel production recom
mended by the USDA. Experts
from retail and wholesale fields
will be present to help develop
promotion plans, Case announced.
AA To Hear
Van Vactor
District Judge D. E. Van Vac-
tor will discuss the legal side of
the alcoholic problem Friday night
at a meeting the Klamath Falls
group of Alcoholics Anonymous in
the A A Center, 120 R i v e r s i d e,
Maple Park.
The meeting which is scheduled
to start at 8:30 p.m. will be open
to all persons having an alcoholic
problem or who are lnterestea in
AA's program for aiding uncon
trolled drinkers.
Dick C, one of the founders of
Alcoholics Anonymous in Klamath
Falls, said the organization is rap
idly growing. He pointed out that
more young persons than ever De
fore have been attracted to the AA
program.
"A few years ago," he said,
"about the only alcoholics who
turned to AA were those who had
hit bottom and had no place else
to turn. It's an altogether different
story today. Persons who sought
AA help were nearly always in their
late forties or early fifties.
"At present younger persons are
joining AA before they have lost
their Jobs or sulfered other serious
setbacks due to uncontrolled drink
ing." Dick C. also pointed out that Al
coholics Anonymous has nothing to
offer the social drinker.
We are not interested in 'Sat
urday night drunks' or persons
who can take it or leave it alone."
he concluded. "Our program is for
those persons who cannot control
their drinking and whose lives, as
a result, have become unmanage
able." EXPLOSION
HAMBURG, Germany I.T. The
Hamburg newspaper Die Welt re
ported Monday that a newly built
Soviet oil refinery near Stalingrad
was destroyed by a tremendous
explosion Aug. 14. The newspaper
said hundreds were killed, includ
ing two prominent officials in the
Soviet oil industry.
