WASHINGTON Sen. H.
Alexander Smith iR-NJ) said to
day tbe American 7th Fleet should
be able to block any Chinese Com
munist attempt to invade the l.s-
land of Formosa.
"The Communists might be able
to mass thousands of sampans
which could be ominous," Smith
said in an Interview. "But they
could never cross against the mod
era naval vessels of our 7lh Fleet.
We're not worried about that."
Smith, charlman of the Far East
subcommittee of the Senate For
eign Relations Commmittee, ap
pro v e d President Eisenhower's
declaration yesterday that any
Communist invasion of the Chinese
Nationalist-held island would have
to run over the 7th Fleet.
The President served that calm
but measured reminder to the
Reds in answer to a question at
his news conference.
Premier Chou En-lai said only
last Friday that Communist China
quarters of Chiang Kai-shek's Na
tionalists, and warned the Unit
ed States against interfering. -
A reporter , asked the President
what would happen if the Reds did
move in force against Formosa.
Elsenhower said orders to the
7th Fleet to defend the island are
still in effect.
"That has .been bur policy and
it should continue to be," Smith
commented.
Asked If his group had any in
formation on whether the Commu
nists are serious in threatening to
take Formosa, Smith replied:
"I think they're bluffing, but of
course you never know when
you're dealing with. Communists;"
On the use of other forces, Smllh
commented: "We might have to
use some air, but we have plenty
of that on Okinawa."
