US Troop Withdrawal From Korea Part Of New Plan
WASHINGTON W The United
States will pull two thirds of its
ground strength out ot Korea in
the next few months In carrying
out a new military strategy to
mount a flexible defense against
Communist China and at the same
time build up a central strategic
reserve at home.
In the largest peacetime rede
ployment of American forces, an
nounced yesterday, four full divi
sions will be withdrawn from Ko

units will return to the United

Optometric
Meeting Held
Inadequate vision ranks second
only to neglected teeth among
America's most common health
problems, said one of the nation's
foremost authorities on the psyco
physiological aspects of vision, Dr.
M. Skelflngton. Dr. skelfington
conducted four seminar sessions
on vision for optometrists ot this
area In Medford Tuesday.
Dr. Skefflngton stated that 30
to 40 per cent of all children are
handicapped in school by visual
problems. Parents should not as
sume that their child has perfect
vision just because he passed the
distance Snellen letter chart at
school, he declared. This Is an
excellent measure of visual acuity
of each eye at 30 feet, he contin
ued, but It does not find the hid
den visual problem that .can be
the really serious one to the child.
Many children wiih 20-30 vision
have binocular problems and
other types of visual dlturbances
at the reading distance that re
sult in poor scholastic achievement.
Dr. Skefflngton went on to point
out that these uncorrected visual
difficulties resulting in failure in
school work often lead to misbe
havior, and Juvenile delinquency.
wnen the child is unable to
achieve In school tacks, said Dr.
Skefflngton, he attempts to gain
recognition by becoming unsocial
and hard to get along with, both
at school and at hnmp
My plea," said Dr. Sefflnar-
lon, ' is lor tne cmidren with the
hidden problems which are the un
suspected cause of retarded read
ing, low grades, or a personality
maladjustment. With good teacher
ooservatlon, an adequate school
vision screening program, and
community consciousness," he
concluded, "our children need not
be handicapped In their develop
ment by these hidden visual dif-
flcultles."
Dr. R. J. Harrahlll of Klam

meeting.
