Queen Holds
Traditional
Investure
LONDON, LP In a gilt and
cream throne room at Bucking-
nam palace the Queen was holding
an investiture.
Two hundred and fifty cf the
Queen's loyal subjects were In line
before her waiting for their honors.
Around her were generals, admir
als, court officials, ladies In wait
ing and guards In Tudor uniforms.
But the orchestra was out of
tune. A violinist sawed down hard
on the wrong note.
Queen Elizabeth II went on
awarding Military Crosses. Mili
tary Medals, creating knights and
giving out Orders of the Bath and
the British Empire. She either did
not notice the sour note or she
was being ladylike.
While the ceremony proceeded, a
helicopter whirled noisly Into the
sky from the palace lawn. The
plane carried the Duke of Edin
burgh on a visit to an agricul
tural research station.
Hollywood would stage an in
vestiture far differently than Buck
ingham Palace. Hollywood would
have the Queen In ermine, robes
and satin. Instead, in the investi
ture last week, she wore a light
green and white silk dress. It was
. sleeveless and short.
' Hollywood would have the audi
ence cloaked In quiet dignity. In
"real life, the audience fidgeted,
twisted and turned. The folks
most of them proud daughters and
wives just could not resist look
ing around for dad, about to be
come a. knight. When they finally
spotted the old man among the
250 others, most of them tittered
a bit and slipped him a quick
wave. :
There 'was- once a time when
these investitures were more
solemn and royal. Queen Victoria
liked them regal. But to become
a knieht these days you don't even
need a morning suit or dress uni
form. You can step up and become
a member of the Order of the
British Empire In the same clothes
you wear to work.

days with the Harry Fraziers.
Robert Bilderback is Harry's neph
ew. Other visitors at the Frazier
home for a few days were Jimmy
Smith and Bobby Gayello, Kelsey
ville, California.
Little Mike Eittrelm, 8 month
old son of the Sr., Mike Eittriems
is spending a few days with his
aunt, Mrs. Bill Burnett and family
while his parents are at Coos Bay,
with the drum corp.
Mrs. Don Ross and Mrs. Pete
Hodges, Tulelake, spent Monday
evening with the Les Leavitts.
Other visitors were Mr. and Mrs.
Delbert Carr, and Mrs. Dick Der
ry. Malin.
Mr. and Mrs. Elliott House spent
Sunday at Bly with their sons and
their families. -
(Catherine Dearborn; who is em
ployed in Klamath Falls, spent the
weekend with relatives and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Derry and
family. Malin, visited with Mr. and
Mrs. Mike Dearborn and family

Washington. They were Saturday
evening dinner guests of the Nich

for local ranchers in extensive land
leveling operations.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Corona spent

Mr. and Mrs. Dick Young and
her mother, Mrs. Eva Pritchett,
snent the weekend here from
Mitchell, Oregon, visiting the Bud
Pritchett family and the Neil Neil
sons. Diane Ruegg, Trail. Oregon,
came Tuesday to spend a few
davs with Mr. and Mrs. Elmer
(Dutch) Zumbrun and Billy.
Second Lieut. Gary Smith and
his bride of July 5th were house
auests at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Waiter Wise. The young
couple were enroute to a naval
air base near Tuscon, Arizona,
where Lieut. Smith will receive
six months' training. He was grad
uated July 4th from Annapolis Na
val Academy, wilh the highest rat
ing of his class, and was married
the following day.
Wednesday logging operations by
the Modoc Lumber Co. got In high
gear at the 7 Mile division of U.S.
Forest Service timber west of
here, when trucks started hauling
logs to the sawmill at Klamath
Flls. A crew of ten men had been
busy for some time previous falling
timber at the site. A road is being
built by the company. Equipment
was moved this week from Beatty,
where logging had been underway
for the past two months at the
Black Hills unit of U.S. Indian For
est Service timber; 100.000 feet of
logs remain there on the ground,
and will be hauled this week to
the Modoc Lumber Co. mill.
Albert Bricco was passing out
rigars Sunday on the occasion of
the birth of his fourth child, a son,
born Saturday, July 17, at Klamath
Valley hospital. The new arrival
weighed 8 lbs. 10 oz, the name
of Bruce Albert has been chosen
lor him. Maternal grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Jack Thomas,
Fort Klamath. Paternal grandfa
ther Is Benjamin H. Bricco.
E. W. Brewer Is home from
Warm Springs, the Warm Springs
Lumber Co. is one of the many
companies currently on strike.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman Van Ider
