HOLLYWOOD ( At last I've
heard an actor admit that waiting
ior a job is a irustraiing, nerve
wracking, baffling experience. Be
fore the big break came, most of
mem will tell you with a new
born confidence It was Just a mat
ter of calmly waiting.
The man with the candid ap
proach is Alvy Moore and he has,
In "Susan Slept Here," his first
big role. It Is a comedy part, as
Oleic Powell's ex-Navy sidekick,
diid already it is making Moore
important.
Alvy has been around Hollywood
fur years trying to break In. He'd
get an occasional bit and an In
frequent TV show, but it was dif
ficult to make ends meet. He had
an agent, but the studios nlways
said, "Yeah, but what's he ever
done?"
Small parts, the agent would say,
but he's a comer. He's a different
Mrt of comedian, has a unique
delivery and a great comedy forte.
Why he's ... but by then the
pitch would be ended and still Alvy
didn't have a Job.
The fact that he had played Lt.
Pulver in "Mr. Roberts" for 14
months didn't impress anyone.
When he was called to read for
"Susan," he went with the usual
high hope and the single thought,
"This is it." But the butterflies
in his stomach didn't stop flutter
ing until the producer said,
"You're hired."
Says Alvy: "I can't describe how
terrible It is to be an actor and
to be out of work. You wake up in
the morning and say, 'I can't get
out of bed what will I do to
day?' There is nothing to do but
wait for the phone to ring. In New
York an actor can look for work.
But in Hollywood it isn't done be
cause it is unprofessional. Besides,
producers won't even let actors in
to their offices without appoint
ments unless the actor drives a
Cadillac. . ,
"Funny thing, the actor who
drives a Cadillac Is considered a
better actor than one who drives,
say, a beat-up '47 Plymouth. Even
tlie gatemen wouldn't let me drive

guy with the big car must be a
better actor, everyone in Holly
wood thinks, because he gets more
money. It is a phony place, all
right. When you're nobody, people
look right through you." '

MR. AND MRS. CHESTER ARTHUR ESGATE, 1628 Derby
Street probably hold t record for the largest family in Klamath
County. They are parents of 15 children. Mr. and Mrs. Esgate
cam to Klamath Falls in 1929 and have made their horns at
their present address since then. Mr. Esgate, a farmer and

Machine Gun Kelly, followed in the
news by millions when he was,
for a brief period, America's most
notorious desperado, still drew
3,300 people in death.
They burled Kelly yesterday in
the Cottondale cemetery.
Only one relative was present. It
was Boss Shannon, who still calls
Kelly "George." Shannon is his
father-in-law. He loaned Kelly, his
farm home for Kelly's most fa
mous crime, went to prison wiJi
him, finally reserved Kelly a spot
of ground in the cemetery.
Like a lot of others, Boss Shan
non filed past the casket for a
last look.
When he saw Kelly's face, he
broke Into a smile.
''Well, George," he said, "you
sure look nice." :

ceremony.

Kelly was sent to prison for the
4200,000 kidnaping of oilman
Charles F. Urschel, then of Okla
homa City, now of San Antonio,
Tex. Urschel was held on Shan
non's farm. Kelly got life, as did
Kathryn and Mrs. Shannon. Boss 1
got 11 years. '
Kelly died in Leavenworth prison
July 17. Boss already was out and I
had returned to his farm. I
Two preachers ofiiciated at the
rites. Neither mentioned the name
of Kelly.

for Esther. In the pool are statues
of Apollo and several other fellows

Esther kisses him. This is fan
tasy? On the screen the entire se
quence will last but seven minutes.
But it involves 15 players and
technicians, five weeks of rehears
al and five full days of filming.
Heretofore, Esther's underwater
life has been filmed through a
window in the side of a big tank.
That got to be pretty stale stuif,
because about all Esther could do
was cut her capers in front of the
camera. The limitations were pre!
ty narrow. In this one, called
"Jupiter's Darling," the cameras

Part of the rehearsal time was
spent determining how long Esther
and the si males representing
the ancient deities could stay un
der water. The limit was SO sec
onds. Hermes had to break up the
action into M-second takes. This
meant something had to be done
about the music, because you Just
can't play music willy-nilly and
hope it fits. Eight bars run 50 sec.
onds. So everything had to be co
ordinated to the second.
It would seem that after Hermes
got this thing all set up and timed
and rehearsed it could be knocked
off in eight 60-second takes. But
movies can't be made so easily.
There will be long delays while the
swimmers Test, while lights are
focused and cameras moved. And
each tiny part of the scene will be
filmed many times from varying
angles.
If you see this picture you are
apt to wonder how Esther's red
hair stays in place under water.
Simple. She douses her head with
transparent grease and her braids
ore wired into place, ahe explains.
