ONLY ONE
MEDIUM MEETS ALL
OF YOUR BASIC
ADVERTISING MUSTS
THAT'S THE NEWSPAPER!
We're likely to forget this sometimes because ,we take our daily
newspaper too much for granted . . . the way we do the water
in the tap, the car in the garage, or gasoline at the corner pump.
It's pretty hard to imagine what life would be like without
cars ... OR WITHOUT OUR NEWSPAPERS. And yet, most
of us continue to take the newspaper for granted. The Herald
and News is your major link with the news of the community
and the world. It provides a medium of entertainment and
knowledge that would be sorely missed if discontinued . . . and
... it is the most potent, down-to-earth local selling force
available to the advertiser of goods and services. It is the
advertisers local link with the buyer at the level where goods
must be sold. It is the one medium that does not have to
compete with others for attention.

FHA Reports
On Fiscal
Year Loans
K. W. Sawyer, slate director
of the Farmers Home Administra
tion, ' Portland, released figures
this 'week Indicating that loan
authorizations for the fiscal year
1945-55 will be about the same as
for the past fiscal year.
Funds allotted for Oregon are as
follows:
Farm ownership and develop
ment loans $236,486; Water fa
fility loans $300,000, and production
or operating loans Jl, 500,000.
The authorization for water fa
cility loans $300,000, and production
year, and operating loans are $90,.
000 less.
Farm families in Klamath and
Lake counties have made good
use of Farmers Home Administra
tion credit and services this past
year and hav stepped up the el
ficlency of their farm operations,
Sawyer stated. A total of 1152,400
has been loaned in the two coun
ties for equipment, livestock, fer
tilizer and seed.
A large proportion of the money
loaned during the past twelve
months has been to veterans and
other young farmers who are es
tablishing better farm set-ups.
Their greatest need was for ade
quate credit and help in de
veloping sound systems of farm
ing. During the past several years an
additional $71,610 has been loaned
under water facility au
thorization for such purposes as
f land leveling and installation or
repair or Irrigation systems for
better land and water usage.
No loans can be made by the
FHA to farmers who can secure
the financing they need from other
credit sources, Sawyer concluded.
The county office for Klamath
and Dkke counties is located In the
postoffice building In Klamath
Falls.
Mother To
Testify At
Inquest
CHICAGO tfl The mother of
Montgomery Ward Thome will be
recalled at his inquest to testify
about her whereabouts on the day
his body was found.
This was announced by Coroner
Walter McCarronn yesterday.
Meanwhile, stained bedding and
other articles found In Thome's
room after his mysterious death
June 19 were turned over to a
team of four pathologists for ex
amination and analysis.
Two housemaids, Elizabeth Law
ton and Sheila de Leon, testified
at the Inquest that Mrs. Thome
went to nearby Lake Geneva, wis.,
to attend a dog show at about
noon on the day Thome's body was
found.
They said she returned when they
notified her by telephone of her
son's death.
The body of 20-year-old Thome
was found in his $75-a-month room
about noon and doctors estimated
he had died about 5 a.m.
Nlhe d ays before his death,
Thome, heir to a mail order for
tune, revised his will leaving
three fourths of his estate to his
sweetheart, Maureen Ragen, 18.
and her mother Aleen.
His mother, who was sole ben
eficiary under an earlier will, was
given only a one-eighth share.
The articles the pathologists will
examine include a bed sheet, mat
tress pad, a handkerchief, a wad
of cotton, part of a cigarette and
a portion of what appeared to be
a pill.
One of the pathologists. Dr. Otto
Saphir, said the articles "may be
very valuable evidence" in help
ing determine the cause of
Thome's death.
The inquest was continued to
July 26.
